The fiance and I are packing up the Jeep and heading to California on the 18th of this month. We want to camp our way there and back and are looking to do it as cheaply as possible due to gas prices.

I'm looking for ideas, tips etc. (Compact ways to pack tools, must haves for minimalist camping) We have some pretty good ideas so far but I'm hoping for additional ideas from people who have done this ahead of me. The last time I drove across country I was 18 and with my dad as he helped me move back home to Michigan. We will not discuss exactly how long ago that was.

I have a full size trunk in the Jeep (removed the back seat) and a mountaineer rack. I'm debating a netting system for the rollbars so I can pack the mountaineer rack a bit tighter. We're going to run with the safari top and the windjammer will be tucked under the toneau cover in the event of weather.

Yes, we're packing cameras (still and video) and the GPS's. This will be a well documented trip.

Thanks in advance everyone!
