id think you need the usb cord to download maps from another source wouldnt you? the memory will fill up fast if it dont have an sd card for expandable memory. you can load alot of trails yourself in real time mapping trails. but i heard if you download trails from someone elses gps the memory fills up fast. im sure jarhead or greybeard will chime in they are the gps gurus. i can barely dial a cellphone. congrats on the new gps though. i got one on my christmas list for this year, hope santa is good to me.

Okay, I went to visit Garmins web site: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=9160 to have a look see at your unit. The nüvi 200 comes preloaded with City Navigator® NT map data for the continental U.S., Hawaii and Puerto Rico (no Alaska or Canada detail).

The bad news is you are pretty much limited to street usage. I could not find where it listed any type of Track Capability and a MapSource Topo Map is not an option either as an SD Card or Software upload.

Can you trade it for the GPSMAP 60 : https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=145&pID=224
It actually costs a little less but has the features you are looking for off-road (Track log: 10,000 points, 20 saved tracks)?

garmin says that with mapsource i can upload custom maps but the detail will not be as good as with a handheld unit. they also say that it will still work in off-road condetions. just no detail. i am confused.

mapsource will work with this gps according to garmin. it wont let me do "tracking" but i can upload third party maps to a SD card

    i found this site.
    http://www.vvmapping.com/gpscompatible.html
they say there maps will work with my unit.

i guess i really dont care about making my own tracks, just want good 3rd party maps uploaded.

i got the nuvi on sale for 199.95

I wish you the best, The more you use it, the more you will learn what it will and won't do.
