I heard about this on the radio, glad they aired it as it might let listeners know the dangers of using chain.

A few years ago I was at a garage as a young tow truck driver was loading a junk truck with no rear wheels. To straighten it out on the bed he chained one corner, and let the winch rip. We saw what he was doing just in time, as the chain exploded into dozens of pieces. Myself, one of my employees, and the owner of the garage hit the ground for cover just in time for the pieces to go flying where our heads were, and several pieces embedded themselves in the cement wall of the garage.

The garage owner is one of the calmest, most laid back people I know. My employee and I just about had to hold him back from killing the wrecker driver.
