Hey Guys

I am new to the forum here, but it looks like a wealth of information.

I have done a lot of snowmobiling up in the Keweenaw Peninsula in the UP and always wanted to see what some of the off-trail areas would be like in the warmer months.

Has anyone done any 4-Wheeling up there? Are the many areas to ride legally? Anyone interested in going up there this spring?

Any information is appreciated!

It is genarally open up there. But it is getting more developed although not like northern Mi!!

As for a spring ride, come up to the Soo may 5-7 (?). the wheeling is better and it's closer. The geology is the same as Keewenaw, only taller!!

Thanks for the invite. I am pretty set on checking out the Keweenaw just because I've been there a bunch in the winter. Have you spent some time up there? Have any recommendations?

I would like to come over to the soo but it looks like the trails might be a little technical. I have an XJ with about 4 inches of lift, 31's, and hopefully a locker by then

I will have to get up there someday though...

It's been a couple years since i was last up there. There were some nice trails of cliff road awhile back, but last trip up there there was logging going on so most of the nice climbes up to the cliffs were gone or closed of. there is also some nice trails going out past copper harbor that follow the shore. If your there in the summer be sure to hit BaeDegree beach, a great place to wash off the trail dust.

I thought some of the trails out by the tip would be pretty good, off of the Mandan Rd.

Where is this BaeDegree beach? I was hoping to find a beach to get out on!

Its neer the Mt. Bohema ski area on the east shore almost due south of copper harbor. I think its one of the best beaches in mi. Its marked in your Mi. gazetter atlas. Nothing like swimming in the big lake.

I went to Da Tech some years ago. I didn't do much wheelin'' then.

Contact the MTU 4wheelers-I can only guess what their web address is.

Locked with 31's should be fine for the trails we're going to run. Took a bunch of stock rubis last fall, thay did fine.

I was wondering if that's what happened, I have spent a lot of time staring at maps and never saw that!

Is there much boulder crawling necessary on the trails? I'm trying to figure out if I need to get some rock sliders before I go up. I guess its not a bad idea either way. Did you get around south and west of houghton at all? I would like to get out to Freda and that area as well.

I would say most of the trails I ran were a 1 or 2 in most spots very senic though. As for the rocks, they tended to be small embeded ones like coble stone, nothing large or rocker scrapin'. the route around mt houghton dead ends at a foot trail that leads out to a waterfall. nice hike to the falls.

Oh yeah. Depending on who and what shows up, we'll have several rides available.

I'll try to put some information up later about the tip of the Keweenaw. Out past Copper Harbor, off the Mandan Road you can get to High Rock Bay and also the old rocket launch site, but you need to be aware of the errors on most of the maps of the area.
We were up there in November. Scenic and interesting, but stock Wrangers in 2 wheel drive had no trouble.

I'd appreciate it! Somehow my post about high rock bay seems to have gotten deleted. I was hoping to find some good stream crossings and some more difficult trails, can you find them if you want to or is it all two track?

I thought I was going to post it tonight.
I found my JPG image which is a topo map of the area with my GPS log added on top.
I just can't figure out how to make the image available on this site tonight.
Hopefully, I'll be able to do better this coming weekend.

They don't really get deleted, they just dont show up on the main pages after a while......for some reason. Do a search for it and you will probably find it. Just post something in that thread again, and it should show up for everyone to see.

I don't know why things get hidden instead of just going back a page or two, but this board doesn't show back pages for some reason.

I think if you go into your preferences you can decide how many pages to display on your browser.

My apology to any of you on dial up. This has some large images.

Map of Copper Harbor and East to the tip of the Keweenaw. Shows a "road" that is on many maps, but is actually where a phone line runs. It may have been drivable at one time, but now would take a chainsaw, a week, and permission from the land owner.

Map showing GPS track log of where we went.
Shows the rocket launch site.
Shows the section of road that you need to take from the Mandan Road. This segment did not show on any of my maps until I plotted it here.

The State owns most of the land out there now. I suggest anyone who wants to poke around out there do it soon. It has been suggested by commitee to improve the road out to HighRock and make a bunch of good camping places day use areas (which means you can't camp there) in the future. Who knows when they will get around to doing all that but you might as well get up there while the camping is good.
