I picked up a couple of stock samurai's this summer and have started into a buildup of the "parts rig" that I got for free with the nice one I bought, It is a fuel injected 1990 softop that got rolled. I alreadly replaced the windshield frame and targa bar - and Lucas helped me straighten the factory rollbar. I've been taking tons of pics along the way, and I plan on submitting a cheap truck buildup article to the Boondocker when I'm done. I'm in the middle of doing a spring over, I added a leaf to all the packs from another set of samurai leafs I had sitting around and I welded the rear carrier. I picked up a set of 5.12 front gears from sidekicks, a harbor freight winch, and a set of used 33's. So far I have less than 500 in the whole project, and the end goal is to keep it less than 1,000. I am looking for ideas to do to this truck (sledgehammers and sawzalls are being used generously), if anyone has any. Also, I am looking for cheap to free ways to get longer brake hoses (I'm sure theres a junkyard swap for this one) and what to do with the steering (I may make a z-link out of the stock unit). I know there are bolt ons for these things, and I could afford them, but I'm really having fun trying to build a cabable rig with a budget, so if you have any ideas?

Keith, Either passenger or drivers side front Tracker flex brake hoses are 30" long. Have the M10 X 1.0 thread with SAE flare, should be perfict fit with lot's of length.
I assume your using the alum front carriers as a drop in 3rd. Keep an eye out for a tracker rear housing and diff. 3rd is iron, larger ring gear and much stronger. Plus you'll get larger brakes.
Bottom line, if you keep it light, it will dam near go anywhere!

may I suggest a bus steering wheel? It might make it nicer with armstrong steering and 33's....

What about a cheap pipe flop cage? Just around your head?

Bolt on and weld some HUGE tow hooks to the frame front and rear?

I have an extra bin of Chinchilla treats that I'm sure your squirrels will love, in case you encounter a big mud pit....

Snorkle made from vacuum hose?

Rocker panel rails?

Now, thats the one that someone died in, right? Maybe it wouldn't hurt to get it blessed...even if you don't believe in that stuff!! For luck!

Thanks Lucas! Yeah, it's the one someone died in during the rollover. I like the blessing idea. I've already got a tracker rear, but its not offset to the side, so I don't think It'll work.
