View Full Version : TROLLS SPRING OPENER - PLEASE READ!!!!

Let me start out by saying that it certainly is heartening to read everyone's comments in the other thread, and see what our event has come to mean to everyone over the past 11 years! And as I have previously stated, the Trolls are deeply sorry that we are unable to put the Spring Opener on this year.
I must reiterate that the reason for the event not taking place this year is, quite simply, club member burnout. Our membership numbers have dropped to a level that is simply too low for us to put on an event of the caliber that we insist on, and the members that we have now are not up to the task of taking on the responsibility of putting on the Opener.
IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE DNR OR THE EVENT PERMIT ISSUE!!!!!!!!!
I point this out because several of the postings in the other thread have taken that "turn", and it concerns myself (as President of the club) and the other club members as well.
In fact, at out monthly business meeting a little over a week ago, a lengthy discussion was held concerning this issue. And as a club. we reached the following decision: NONE OF THE TROLLS WILL BE WHEELING IN THE INDIAN RIVER AREA DURING THE FIRST WEEKEND OF APRIL 2006!!!!!!
Quite simply, what we are asking, is this: STAY HOME! Do not come to Indian River that weekend looking to go wheeling!!!! We will not be there, and we will not lead you on a trail ride!!!
Why are we doing this:: The reason is simple: The Trolls have worked for YEARS to develop a solid working relationship with the local DNR. They know us, and know what we stand for (which is everything that Great Lakes stands for). We do not want to do ANYTHING to jeopardize our reputation OR our relationship with the DNR!! If 20. 30, or even 50 Jeeps were to show up that weekend (or any weekend, for that matter) and head out into the woods without the necessary permits, we will be held accountable, and everything that we have worked so hard for with the DNR will be destroyed!!!
So.....even though we realize that everyone is disappointed that there will be no Opener, we are asking everyone to please NOT come to Indian River that weekend to wheel!!! This has absolutely NOTHING to do with a permit.....we could get a permit in a heartbeat if we wanted one!!
Please.....respectt the Trolls and respect Great Lakes, and don't destroy what has become a great relationship between a small local club and the local DNR office!!!
Hopefully, our little club will grow over the coming months and we'll be able to attract some new members who are excited about bringing the Opener back for 2007!
Thanks to everyone for your patience and understanding!!!

Well stated Tim.
So, we will not be there. Instead, we will be going to Silver Lake for the dune run & quarterly meeting. Hope to see all the former Spring Opener attendees there!

And then a couple weeks later, we'll be in Canada!!

OK.....I've tried to state this as nicely as possible up to this point, but it would seem as if some people are just hell-bent on trying to stir up some sort of trouble.
Perhaps a short history lesson is necessary (please bear with me if you already know this).
We have held this event for 11 years. Up until about 3 years ago, we never had a permit from the DNR. We finally became aware of the "permit issue", and, being the responsible wheelers that we are, WE approached the DNR to inquire about getting a permit for the 2003 Spring Opener. At the time, they weren't entirely sure if we needed a permit, and there were questions about the insurance, etc., so we went ahead and had the Opener (as usual) without a permit.
Then......the week after the Opener.......our President at the time (Tina Brasseur) received a phone call from the DNR man in charge of the Indian River Field Office. The call was somewhat threatening in nature, telling her that his boss was wanting him to cite the Trolls for having the event without a permit!!! But.....he was going to cut us a break and not issue a citation!
S0....the next 2 years, we pulled the permit to hold the Opener.
And....as previously stated....we have done a LOT of other things (Adopt-A-Forest clean-ups, charity work, etc.) to gain a positive foothold with the local DNR.
SO WE DO NOT WANT ANYONE TO JEOPARDIZE THAT!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!
And, quite simply, since we have held an event during the first (and previously second) weekend of April for the past 11 years.......if a bunch of trail rigs show up in town then......guess who will be held responsible?????
We certainly don't pay anyone's taxes....or own the local trails......and we can't tell anyone that they aren't allowed to come up here and play!!!!
All we're asking is that if you respect the TROLLS......and if the Spring Opener really matters to you......and if you really want to see it return (hopefully) in 2007........PLEASE respect us and the area that we play in ALL YEAR and DO NOT cause any trouble for us with the local DNR!!!!!!!
For crying out loud.....is that too much to ask????
Once again, as President of the Troll Four Wheelers, I extend the club's sincere gratitude to those who are supporting our efforts!!!! You are true friends and loyal wheelers indeed!

A 4X4 CLUB THAT DOES NOT WHEEL
"To illustrate this point, for the past several months our club meetings have consisted of no more than 2 officers and only 1 or 2 club members. Tonights meeting that Timbercruiser referred to in his last post never happened.......after planning my weekend around it and rushing home after being out of town for my sons hockey games, the only club member who showed up for the meeting was Timbercruiser. Our by-laws state that we need more participation than that for a valid monthly business meeting, so....no meeting!! "
A 4X4 CLUB THAT DOES NOT MEET
IS THIS THE TROLLS OR "THE TROLL" ??????? :bigemo_harabe_net-163:
I DONT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH YOU SETTING ON THE COUCH AT HOME ON APRIL 1ST BUT DONT COME ON THE NET AND TELL THE REST OF US THAT WE NEED TO STAY OUT OF "YOUR TOWN" ON THAT WEEKEND!!!!!!!
LAST I KNEW IF!!! A GROUP OF TRAIL RIGS WERE TO COME INTO TOWN AND JUST BUY CHANCE!!! DID SOMETHING THAT THE DNR DID NOT LIKE, I THINK THAT THE DNR MAN WOULD NEED TO DO HIS JOB AND FIND THE RESPONSIBLE PARTY !!!! OR IS THAT UP TO THE "THE TROLL " :BangHead:

RBB, first of all do us a favor and quit shouting....that means turn off the caps lock.
Your right, you have the right to wheel anywhere, anytime you want, and no one besides the DNR or USFS can tell you differently. But T-way on behalf of the Trolls has just asked everyone nicely to not come up to Indian River the usual weekend of thier event. That doesn't mean you cannot come the week before or the week after.......it also doesn't mean you cant go to Grayling, West Branch, Mio, Atlanta or anywhere else instead.
No one is telling you don't come to Indian River.....people are just asking nicely to respect them and their relationship with the DNR to not do it on the weekend of the usaul event. Is it really all that hard to respect their wishes?
I guess I just don't understand why people now days don't have respect for one another....it's always all about ME, and I can do what I want....the hell with how that effects others. Thats the main problem with the 4x4 community, not enough helping each other out, to much bickering within'.

EXACTLY why we will NOT be in the area at this time without an invite from the TROLLS! It's their home turf and they know BEST. We'll see them another day or another place!
Thanks for the respectful explaination T-Way ... I knew the Trolls had one and sooner or later, at the right time and place, we would learn the background behind the decision. We 're supports of the cause and if you don't know the details ... it's best to go with the ones most likely to have all the facts ... until you have a chance to become better informed.
Have a HAPPY and SAFE 2006!

Bob,
You're taking this all wrong.
First: The Trolls stated that they would not be putting on the event (one of only 3 in Michigan which means no one else wants to put in the effort) because their club has lost some members and they will not put on an event unless it can be a quality event. They want to do it right or not at all. Simple.
Second: There was some internet chatter about people coming that weekend anyway because they enjoy the area and the people. The talk was to do some informal trail riding.
Third: The Trolls discussed this (no matter how few or many) and felt that it may jeopordize their relationship with the DNR. So, they have asked their FRIENDS to not come as planned in order to not create confusion and controversy with the DNR.
Fourth: Why is it that you feel that you are personally being attacked by the Trolls? They have asked their friends to not make waves with the DNR. If you do not choose to respect this, it is your constitutional right. Have at it. Take as many friends there as you like. Lead the trails on your own. And if the DNR feels there was an event, the Trolls can point the DNR to you. It's your choice. In the meantime, the rest of us will do something else in April.
Remember, you can be part of the problem or part of the solution. The choice is up to you.

Hey Tim,
AJ will be disappointed, as I will be, but no IR for us come April, no problem. Just promise when I come up during the summer you'll have your Lapis Blue (Purple) Jeep ready to go and CB on for your classic chatter. Good luck to the Trolls and I really hope you guys (and girls) can get things put back together for next year. Guess I'll plan my Indiana trip for April.
Hopefully talk with you soon,
Jamie
