Camping on Drummond

This summer my club is planning a Drummond Island Wheeling/Camping trip. I know about the DNR dispersed camping permit. Anything else we need to know? I am organizing this trip and want to make it fun and safe for the whole club. The trip will be the week after July 4th.

I wold suggest calling th local DNR office or tourism agency just to double check on everything

Dispersed Camping
You can camp anywhere on State Forest Property as long as:
• the property is not posted "No Camping"
• you are more than one mile from a designated State Forest Campground
• you follow all State Land Rules
You must also post a Camp Registration Card (PR 4134) at your campsite. To obtain a Camp Registration Card, contact your local DNR Office

Yes there is. A couple of years ago I came upon a big pile of poo in the middle of a trail.

Yes there are many bears. It is a premier bear hunting location in Michigan.

yes!! there are many bears on drummond. i doubt one would attack you, but it is a remote possibility. its more likely they would enter a campsite at night in search of scraps of food or garbage. keep an eye on the kids and pets. make noise, usually they will avoid you. put away all food and garbage. no one should travel on foot alone after dusk. a bear repellant spray is good insurance to have also. you really have little to worry about, but safety first.

Food storage was my main worry. Thanks for all the info from everyone. Keep it comming if you have more to share. My club is very excited abount this trip, and I would love to here about specific "must see" things and places.

I find my chubby ass holds the tent down just fine...

I would like to take my kids camping there also. The bears make a good arguement for a roof top tent. I went to drummond to install the trail markers last spring and had a great time. I just went through my pictures and am looking forward to making a trip back.

Well mark your calendar, the GLFWDA Summer Quarterly will be on DI in June, Sunday the 13th I believe, but Bob D has not put it on the calendar yet. We'll be planning a run on Saturday and who knows, maybe some of us will be around on Friday and/or Monday?? :woot: :woot:

Well mark your calendar, the GLFWDA Summer Quarterly will be on DI in June, Sunday the 13th I believe, but Bob D has not put it on the calendar yet. We'll be planning a run on Saturday and who knows, maybe some of us will be around on Friday and/or Monday?? :woot: :woot:

Maybe. I think I saw him on the Gay beach . . . . . .

We are hoping for a May or June Drummond trip. Maybe that will be the weekend. I will throw it out there to the others.

We are headed there or Munising to see some friends next weekend (10 & 11). We are also going to test out the new rooftop tent hopefully!
