This is on my '02 Liberty with 140,000 miles, auto tranny. Driving along Friday near my home and it was as if it shifted to neutral. I soon discovered I had to keep it in 2nd gear. I drove it to the local shop and they pulled an error code - gear three ratio incorrect - or something close to that. I have never had to have a transmission repaired and I don't know much about them. The local shop recommended a tranny shop. They tell me it needs a rebuild and it will cost $$$.
I am just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this or what questions I need to ask the tranny shop. I have not had a chance to do any research on my own. I just hope the repair last a good long time. The truck has been great and this is by far the biggest repair I have had to make to it. I also own two other high mileage vehicles and I pray they hold up.

Well for one thing you have an elctronically driven tranmission so it's gonna cost some big bucks!! I'mgonnaventure a guess and say your looking at spending somewhere around $800-$1200 in repairs and if your getting it rebuild I would definalty have them install a shift improver kit because what has happened is you have glazed your 3-4 clutchs whether you where low on tranny fluid(main cause for the problem) or some other underlying cause because 140,000 is a short life for a tranny... However when a vehical shifts nice and smooth it's because while the valve body is changing to different clutch packs the current clutch pack continues to spin but looses fluid pressure which is how you glaze your clutchs... With a shift improver kit better known as a shift kit you get a harder shift but you do get any fluid loss in between gears so your clutchs don't spin dry... I don't know a bunch about new computer driven trans but what I've told you I do know also when you go to the tranny shop make sure they install a stage 1 kit if you spend alot of time off road.

Now this guy sounds like he KNOWS transmissions!
Note to self, when in need of a knowledgable Transmission guy in future.
Thanks!

I live in Maybee, it is near Monroe.

I thought 140K was too soon also. I thought I have maintained it pretty good, the fluid has been changed twice and checked often. I don't abuse this truck. Like I said this is its first major repair of any kind. There was a time, the first couple of years or so, that it would downshift hard once in awhile. In fact I forgot about this because it hasn't happened in a very long time.

I don't know which transmission came in the Liberty, but the rebuild of the 42RLE in my Wrangler was about double FaselZ71's estimate including removal and reinstallation.

There ya go like I said I don't know alot the new computer driven transmissions... I was only pulling that estimate outta my previous experince with mechanincally driven transmissions and first generantion computer driven trans like the gm 4l60E and the chylser 500 series that came in the mid 90's grand cherokee's...

I just about dropped a load in my shorts when the estimate came in at $2600 - the last tranny rebuild I did was a '74 Maverick with a C-4....about $450 back in the day!

Well 1500 although it's alot of money is a good deal for the rebuild of a computer driven tranny! Now just make sure the rebuild shop is trusted and make sure they are not gonna feed you abunch of crap and give you a **** trans...
