Anyone ever been to Dallas?
What's it like? Would you consider living there?

I lived there for a summer with my sister when i was 10. it was ok for a kid?? kinda hot temp wise for a michigan kid. she lived by the airport, there was no houses around there. all condos or townhouses. no regular homes around her place. we are talkin 25 years ago could be totally different now?? i went back for her funeral a few years ago and got to check out lake worth. its real nice. they dammed up a couple rivers and made a huge lake out of an area. it was neat there was trees and houses under the water. it raised the humidity level in the area considerably from what i was told. bugs went crazy too.
Texas seems kinda cool to me. great hunting & fishing! i bet the wheeling is good too.
you got a job offer down there??

I have heard rumors about Dallas PD...
And a 10k signing bonus...
Makes a guy think a little. I don't know if I would be interested or not yet. Lots of opportunities and no talk of lay offs so it's hard to blow off.
I've never been to Texas before though. What's the terrain like around Dallas? Flat or hilly? Is the geography sort of like Michigan or like desertish? And how hot does it get?

mind you i was pretty young! but it was flat! and hott! at or near 100 most days. back then there was almost no humidity though. now its a somewhat higher. i would call is desertish! someone from palm springs probably would not.

It's kinda like how you would feel if you were on the surface of the sun type of hot.
I was there for a week at a training seminar in the summer.....I spent my time with the AC full blast in the rental car (barely keeping up), circling the parking structures to find the closest so I wouldn't die of dehydration before making it into the building's AC.
Don't know if it was typical, but I didn't spend but maybe a half hour outside the whole week, it was over 100 everyday. Soooo as far as what its like, when I was there nobody was walking around much, just tons of cars driving around with the windows up and AC on. And there aren't any American cars down there....it must be illegal or something.

Went there a few years back on a vacation of sorts. Nice to visit, but I'd never want to live there. You either live in a $250k+ condo or section 8 housing unless you move way, way out of Dallas/Fort Worth and commute. Met with a few guys working there and asked about the job down there, that's why I'm still working here. Should be even worse now with all the New Orleans hurricane transplants that never went back & the illegals.

So, obviously they didn't have good things to say. What exactly did they say? What was so bad?
I did a quick search on realtor.com and actually found quite a few nice houses in the 150k range, but I have no idea what sort of area they were in, nor did I mapquest it to see the the proximity. But the search was for Dallas so it had to be close.
Honestly, I'm thinking I'll hang out in the OC though. Should be lots of cool things happening for us, but then again with the economy being what it is, it makes me nervous.

I was there once in the early 90's for a one-afternoon meeting to bid a big job. Got off the plane and was blasted by heat as we hurried to a waiting car. Rode to the meeting, got blasted by the heat on the way in to the building. 3-hour meeting, then a one hour walking tour of the pile of dirt that later became the TX Motor Speedway. An hour in the scorching blazing burning sun. Back to the air-conditioned car for the ride back to the air conditioned plane. Didn't get the job (thank God). All I remember was the blast furnace of that July afternoon.
But they say it's a dry heat, so it really isn't that bad. If you are a raisin, or maybe a prune that is.

I have been to and through Texas a number of times over the years. If I had a chance to live and work in Corpus Christi or San Antonio, I'd go. Did you notice Dallas wasn't one of my two choices.
Extreme Heat and Rain are the two seasons most Texans are familiar with.

My wife works for Northwood University and they have a campus down there.
She said she was never going back! They had to cancel their school softball league becuase the ball field had giant cracks in the soil from the heat and lack of rain. Kim said you could lose a leg in some of them.
Did I mention she said she would never go back?

It doesn't appear us Michiganders care much for the heat of Texas...a box of Saran Wrap may be a better idea, if it doesn't help the weight loss, just meet your girlfriend at the front door

My parents live in Fort Worth and I've been there several times to visit. The job market seems to be one of the better ones in the entire country. Each time I've been there it was over 100 degrees the majority of the time, but I didn't think it was that hot. I spent 12 years in North Carolina with 95 degrees and 98% humidity, which always felt much hotter. The one thing I didn't like is that there are no trees and my mom always loved visiting me in North Carolina and Michigan just so she can see trees again. I've heard my dad talk about how rough some sections of Dallas are and that it's worse than when he used to work in downtown Detroit. It's a nice place to visit if you get to sit by the pool, but living down there without having seasons would be tough on me.

Hmmm, a chubby hairy light skined fella living on the surface of the sun. I'm not sure why this doesn't sound appealing.
Thanks for all the input guys! I don't think I'm going to look into this any further.

They said many politically incorrect things I am unable to post publicly. Not kidding. We'll talk over a cold one some day :thumb:

But there is 400 openings.
My brother lives in Houston, I haven't been down to visit yet, and probably won't go until next winter... I don't do heat... From my understanding thought the cost of living there is way cheaper. He had the choice of Florida, Texas, or stay in Connecticut.....

On average the Dallas/Ft Worth area FBI index crime rate is over 2x worse across the board than the rest of the country.

I loved Dallas and Arlington and Ft. Worth. I would move in a heartbeat after seeing 4" of snow on the ground this morning.
