View Full Version : I bought a little brother today!

My TJ has been lonely, so I thought it was about time to purchase a little brother. This morning I was on the road at about 8am and drove to Dalton Ohio with the dealer to pick up my new JK Rubicon. It took about 4 and half hours to get there, and then about 4 hours to get back to Pontiac so I could get to work. They could have picked it up for me but I thought a little road trip sounded like fun. Besides, I should be the first one to put the first 230 miles on it, right? lol
I got to take it to the dealer (Victor George in Flint) in the next couple days and they are going to detail it for me and all.
I'm going up north with it tomorrow night so hopefully I'll be able to give it a proper shakedown, and unite it with it's big brother.
I'll put up photos tomorrow.

Well, today I decided to take Little Brother out and do a little light wheeling to see how it would do. A buddy joined me with his Ranger on 34 inch LTBs. We headed out to the Dunham Lake area again and pretty much followed SnowBlind trails around. We were having a good time and I was pretty much just playing with the lockers and sway bar disconnect. I was leading and really not even spinning tires. It was a good time. About an hour or so in, we get to a trail that wasn't a Snowblind trail, but was broke already. It was snowing heavily so the tracks were a little filled in but nothing really to work about. We made it about a mile or so down this trail without any issues when all of a sudden I come to a sudden stop. I'm stuck. I'm thinking snowmobiles must have packed the very center, and then there were the old tracks that I was driving in. With the warms days a week or so ago, it pretty much turned the center to solid ice and the wheel tracks were deep enough that I wasn't going anywhere. Dan pulled the Ranger in behind to give me a little tug backwards and he ended up getting stuck too, with the strap pulled tight between us. And neither of us had a winch.
Long story short, 4 hours later after lots and lots of digging, a call was made to my dad to bring out Big Brother (the TJ). He brought it out and it pulled us both out with out any problem at all. Big Brother was able to come show Little Brother how it's done. It was a heart warming moment of bonding for the two. lol
As promised in a earlier post, I did get a couple photos of the new JK, but none of the two brothers frolicking in the snow together. It was well after dark by the time the TJ got there.

I have to say I'm really impressed with mine so far. Granted I got hopelessly stuck, but that happens.
It rides nice, is quiet, and from what I can tell is very capable. I am now sort of considering making this my sole jeep, but I don't know if I want to part with my TJ for the harder wheeling.
On a side note, after yesterdays 6 hour stay in the woods, the boss has approved the purchase of a winch! lol

You may already no this, but if you don't it might help...
There is a way to turn traction control off "for real", the switch on the console doesn't really fully turn it off, it will re-engage at certain wheel speeds, depending on other circumstances.
Also, the lockers work in a similar fashion, they may dis-engage at certain speeds and t-case positions. The overide for this is a manual one and wiring needs to be done to make it work.
Unless of course they changed that stuff on the 09's
I haven't wheeled my CJ since we got our JK last March!

I was aware of the traction control button, but until yesterday I thought you could run the lockers in 4 high as well. I was wrong. Ugh. I have to figure out how to override that.

You make it sound like you've never done either of these. We've all went wheeling alone at one point or another.
As for not wheeling without a winch, we've all done it as well, and I bet many people here still do. Not everyone has a winch. I wheeled for many years without a winch. It sure is handy, but I wouldn't say it's a need for every wheeler.
Also, we've all gotten stuck before, and will again. It's part of wheeling and I would even venture so far as to say it's fun.
This particular trip, neither of us had a winch, but we both had a full assortment of tools, multiple recovery straps, jacks, shovels, clothes, etc. At no time was anyone in danger. Where we got stuck we were less than a mile from M-55. I hate to preach, but at no time was this a "bad" situation, nor would I be dumb enough to put myself in one. We even had full communication with the outside world via cell phone the whole time. I grew up in the area so I know the area and a bunch of people close. It just took a little time to get out.
I'd rather be out wheeling and getting stuck, then not wheeling at all.:soap:

The key to JR story is BE PREPARED for what might happen.
And it appears they were.
It's a free country ... but we just don't want nothing BAD happening to the GL-VP or any newbies that might be reading.
PS - Had a GREAT time at Sno*Blind, the 15th year for the event.
Plenty of snow in the woods and MORE came down everyday!
I know ... no pics????

Next time you'll have to get stuck and blame it on the tires and the need for lockers and throw in a lift kit to fit the tires and pretty soon you're an addict like the rest of us! :lmao::lmao::lmao:

lol. After my TJ rolled in and pulled us both out so easily, she made a comment how the JK needs bigger tires. However, I need to keep it relatively stock, at least for a while, because it's going to be the DD for the next couple years.

I don't want anything bad to happen to anyone either. Also, I figured you all would get a little humor out of my mistake.
Doug, I actually forgot about Sno*Blind going on. We got up there and I had to cruise through the hotel parking lot to look at rigs. When I pulled in, people were lining up for a night run on Friday night. I wanted to line up so bad! lol. Glad you had a good time.

I don't see it as a mistake. If you run a rig with lockers, sway bar disco's, etc, etc and don't get to the "edge" of stuck often... you've wasted your money. Sounds like it was a blast-wish I could have made it. By the time Dan called, I was already at my daughter's game and not in the jeep (brrrrrr). Next time I'll make it and I can see what that rubi is capable of. Heard lots about them and the wife wants one, but never witnessed first hand how they do in stock fashion. Glad to hear you're babying it during the break in period! :lmao: Just like I would! :thumb:

I hear you made a offroad course at your place? I got to come check that out.
It's got 600 miles on it now. I think I wasn't even at 400 when we took it out. Yup, it's getting broke in nicely. lol

Room to run a roll bar through the dash or a lot stronger factory cage.
Axle vents that go above the top of the tires - at least to beltline level.
Put the evaporative control canister somewhere it won't get ripped off by a stick or rock.
Relocate the swaybar and locker switches somewhere easy to reach and see when you're bouncing around offroad.
Full skid plates standard for rubicon.
Real bumpers, not roto-molded toys.
Rear seat 12VDC outlet in center console.
More small storage places for cellphones, wallets, sunglasses, hats, etc.
Screw rivets that are actually reusable to hold the front facia, splash shields, air dam, radiator mount etc.

Yeah, He nailed it. I was out yesterday at the Mounds and the front bumper looks like it's been to hell and back. Crazy how plastic doesn't hold up to rocks...
I was underneath it today, and found that there is pretty much no skidplating. What's up with that? A truck offroad package has skidplates, and nothing else. A jeep offroad package has a bunch of traction goodies, but no skidplates. Ugh. There is a bunch of real estate uncovered (engine, transmission, transfer case).

*12VDC in the rear cargo area would be useful too
*removeable liners for the cupholders - obviously not designed by someone with kids....
*shallow tray at the top of the center stack like a TJ for little stuff
*seat fabric that doesn't stain when exposed to any liquid, even clear water
