I was wondering what this really is. is it just that peat stuff you use in gardens or is it made for oil dry use?

Peat moss that you get in stores has a high % content of moisture. With the moisture in it, it will not absorb the hydrocarbon base oils. It won't pick up the oil. The Peat Sorb is specially dried.

we use the stuff at work. it soaks up everything but water. something about how its dried prevents water from being re absorbed. plus its really light to carry as compaired to clay based absorbants. last I knew were buying the stuff in roll and bag form

GLFWDA is purchasing it in compressed 4 Cu ft bales and dividing it out into containers of about 1.5 gallon size jugs. Working with Jarhead on acquiring a viable jug size to package it in. Right now the jug available from PeatSorb sells for $20. With doing the packaging work ourselves we hope to get it down to $15 or lower depending on what we can get arranged for the jug costs.
We currently have a variety of sizes from 3 quart ziplock bags @ $5.00 to 5 gallon pales @ $35 and numerous sizes in between.

Question: Once it's used, it has to be picked up, if I'm understanding it correctly. Then where can it be taken for disposal?
Great idea for off road runs. I'm going to suggest it to our club out west here to have on hand. Bashed oil pans are not uncommon out here.

Jim M. would be able to go further with this, but if I understand correctly you leave it there. It somehow absorbs everything bad and makes it safe to leave. I guess they use it in oil spills in water all the time. It absorbs the oil, then sinks and it's all safe.

If all goes as planned, it'll be on the store for purchase once we get the container issue sorted out. Until then, you can pick some up at Quarterly meetings. One is coming up in April.

My initial investigation on this is that there is a HUGE difference between Peat-Sorb and Newpig oil absorbant. Peat Sorb is a natural product ,i.e. peatmoss and occurs naturally in the environment and Newpig, according to the MSDS sheet is a polypropolene (i.e. plastic).
The biggest difference in handling these two products is this:
NEWPIG:
13. Disposal Considerations
Waste Disposal Method:
If unused, no special precautions are
necessary. Dispose of in accordance with federal, state and local
regulations. In certain types of cleanup applications the nature of the
material recovered will classify the resulting spent material as a
hazardous component. In such instances the material should be
disposed of via an approved hazardous waste disposal service and the appropriate manifesting obtained.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
PeatSorb
Because Peat Sorb does not leach, it may be possible
to landfill the saturated Peat Sorb. Where local
regulations permit, Peat Sorb can be incinerated or
disposed of in landfills. Since Peat Sorb is an
energy source, it will contribute about 15,500 BTU’s
per pound and will assist in the incineration of
absorbed oils.
(Translated: Peat Sorb is constantly undergoing natural biodegradation, therefore it will continue to decompose the absorbed oils natuarally, therefore it can be left on the ground to biodegrade naturally.)
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
This is a substantual impedimant to in-field use of this product. Peat Sorb is specifically NOT classified as a hazardous waste product even AFTER it has absorbed the oil. The Peat Sorb absorbant can be picked up is so desired or it can even be left on the ground and not picked up. It will biodegrade naturally. Something Californians will obviously approve of.
Nick, there are only 2 regional distribution sources for this product:
http://www.peatsorb.ca/unitedstates.asp
As an aside, the Rock Crawling sanctioning bodies, specifically WeRock use this product and without it, the BLM and the USFS would not let them use public property for competition. It is also the product being specified for future rock courses in Michigan as an enabler to install a course without lining it with clay or rubber bladders to keep the oil from leaching into the ground water.

I found out that 2 quarts of oil takes 1 1/2 of the 3 quart bags of Peat Sorb to soak it up off a driveway in a 10 MPH wind. So Jim, Bring me an extra $20 of the stuff to the April meeting. Cheapest containers you have, I can package it.

I don't suppose we have it in the original factory containers?
I like to use it for advertising purposes when I'm in da woods..
It makes more of an impression than a bucket full of 'stuff' that I say is Peat Sorb.

What gets me is the poor attitude some people have in regards to vehicle related spills. I was disappointed to see that a couple people on GL4x4 wanted to argue the point to just leave oil spilled on trails and rocks in place because in the grand scheme 'my little bit doesn't matter.'
The lack of individual responsibility is amazing. I was always taught to remember "It starts with me."

I must not be wheeling hard enough Jim. I faithfully lug my 32.4oz Maxwell House jug of PeatSorb everywhere, but have not had a spill nor had anyone in my group have a spill since I started carrying it. But like my first aid kit, fire extinguisher, gallon jug of water and 45# tool bag I carry it in case I need it. It takes up some space, adds a little weight, but I would rather go prepared than not. I did however bump into a guy on DI last year dead on the side of the road who needed my spare quart of oil. He didn't need the PeatSorb though because he wasn't really sure when/where he had lost the oil....

I actually got almost 10 mpg on my trip out west last month. It dropped to just under 9 pulling all the grades.
You need a good bladder to drive that though. I only had to stop once coming back from the western side of Montana:ahhh:
