View Full Version : Gitchee Gumee scouting trip invite

WhiteRhino

Several members of GL are going to be in Canada over the Labor Day weekend scouting new and overgrown trails for the upcoming GG event. In the past, we have gone with as many as 12-14 rigs in one group. We found dead ends, tight brush, some difficult obstacles and had some good times. But, our explorations have not been efficient. Example; Last year, we thought we had a line on a new trail that was an offshoot of a boring trail we explored the year before. We could not find the offshoot and ended up spending an entire day re running a trail that no one wanted to run. Again!

In order to be more effective this year, we are hoping to do things a little different. We have a few people who know the area pretty well and have ideas of where they want to explore. In addition, we have at least one new trail that has been discovered that requires some brushing. We hope to split up into small and capable groups for the exploration part. The trail to be brushed can be reached by a stock vehicle. However, stock vehicles will not make it through the obstacles and members will need to walk to help brush. I have walked this trail and it takes about 45 minutes to reach the top from where stock vehicles must park.

Any GL member is welcome. But, my invitation has some disclaimers that must accompany it and I do not want to sound selfish, premidona, bossy etc etc etc.
We need people who are:
-Not afraid of scratches on their vehicle or arms.

-Willing to get out and brush out a trail. In some cases, there may be more leg work than driving. Bring loppers.

-Willing to not be offended if thier rig needs to go a different direction. Explanation: There are some pre existing trails that can be run without tons of area knowledge. You may be a perfect candidate to run a trail to learn it and be the trail leader or ender for GG.

I am going up on Thursday night and exploring Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We are leaving Sunday night to get south of Mackinaw because of the bridge walk.

A couple of us are also considering traveling 2-3 hours further north on Saturday night to check out a new area outside of Wawa. The story is that the local chamber of commerce is promoting a wheeling area. One person has been there and says it looks promising. Anyone is welcome. Just plan on a few extra bucks for gas. Ouch!!!!

Hope to see you all there.
A roll call response would be appreciated.

Jim

Hopefully, I'll be up by Thursday....if my tow vehicle behaves.

Same plan for me, Friday-Sunday, heading down Sunday night, past the bridge.

I've got my little chain saw with more gas this time!

Kieth and his truck are following me up too.

I'm picking up a TOPO CD for my new Garmin GPS to cover Canada as well as MI.

I'll be there. I found a nasty hill that will be rated a 5. I had to turn my quad around because it was too steep!!

I'll be there Friday (?) and Saturday.

I had to roll start it because it was too hot. Plus the brakes aren't fixed yet. It was quite a ride-I had to shut it off to get it to stop!!!

It's located near The ski resort -not buttermilk. The town east of 17.
We scouted it last summer, and decided further exploration was needed. Vic knows where it is as well.

After you have been there how many times, do you not know the names better or are you being purposely vague?

I think I'm only going to give one day out in the Searchmont area this trip. I'll push through PIW and Short Cut and see about anything else in the area, closer to camp.

I hope to spend most of the time closer to camp scouting, gas as high as it is, I'd rather not drive 1/2 hr to 45min to the trail head!!!

I prepped the Jeep: I spray painted my bumper and added a new sticker.

Lucas

P.S. Jim, are you taking the Jeep or what??

WhiteRhino
August 20th, 2005, 10:46 AM
I have to take the jeep since it is the only orv I have.
Jut got the new ring & pinion, & axle shafts.
Picked up the trans last night.

Trans goes in this weekend and the new axle swap next weekend. So, if we stay on schedule, we will make it.

Lucas, we need to get together on the awards. Time is short.

Searchmont. I was having a senior moment!! And I'm not a senior!!

It's off of Ranger Lake road down a logging trail. it has a creek crossing , too.

I'm out Jim...too much damage from RTCC. I have just about got the steering box back on the frame but the front driveshaft is going to hold me up. I have no money to put into it right now...gotta sell some d44's out of a scout...and I can't find a stock front driveshaft that is close enough to me to go get, then chop it down so it fits in time. Plus I have a rear pinion bearing "issue" I think....I know the seal is leaking.

Looks like it'll be just me and my TJ going. Spent the weekend prepping stuff and I got to tow my TJ for some distance. The steering in the Cherokee is just way too loose to feel safe with. I swapped in a used steering shaft, better, but it still was sloppy. I'd need a new steering shaft, new swaybar bushings, new rear spring bushings etc...

So, I'm heading up without towing. We'll be there Thursday sometime, setup camp, maybe go out and see what we can find, it depends on the time.

I've got all my maps and GPS stuff ready to go!

You can add Keith to the list of who's coming.

Yeah!!! Gas is at 3.30 where I am....I can only wonder what it costs in Canada!!!

So, put on another 100 bucks in gas for me!!! Might be eating bread and water only so I can afford to get home!

Now whats this only one extra tank of gas per vehicle??? So, I can pull the 30 gal tank from the Cherokee and strap it to the back and be OK???

I've also heard rumors of stations closing because they "ran out" of gas.....I know I can make it to Grayling at least before filling.

I'm heading up Thursday AM. Leaving around 8am. 1-586-713-6779 if anyone needs a hand or something for whatever reason. Its about a 7 hour trip for me...

Tim,
Mike pretty much spelled it out. Here's my spin.
Wind through town following hwy 17 north signs
About 15 miles out you will head down a long grade (mile long hill)
This is the first time you can see Lake Superior in the distance.
It flattens out and runs for a mile through a low boggy area.

Blueberry is right after the bog on the right.

See you there

Our scouting has yielded good resuklts. Several new spots were found and should make for some good wheeling. The trail that I was on is called "lost boys" ( guess why!) and is similar to the Trestle trail-except this one is uphill. We also found a great hill climb for the big dogs. That one took two hours to get one truck up it!! Overall, I would say it was a good weekend.

While we were not able to add a siginificant level 3 or 4 trails to the GG inventory, we did have an enjoyable time scouting for new stuff. We are facing an ultimatum with the current trail selection though. Some of the kick butt difficulty trails are newly created courtesy of the MNR and their logging contracts which result in great little spurs up the sides of the mountains. We'll have to keep an eye out for more of these projects along the main roads. Other trails are fast growing in, due to limited use. PIW for example is a great trail for stock vehicles and 31's. But this trail is fading fast, we were pushing brush for a majority of the trail. Most of which was touching in the middle of the trail. While I know we don't want to add 20 more miles of trail to be brushed, we do need to keep running these trails to keep them open.
We also found some skidder trails farther north for those who don't mind a 30 mile pavement trip followed by a 15 mile gravel road run. Yes these are quite a distance away especially @ $1.39/L. However, there were some very interesting spurs up the side of the mountain and an awsome rock cravasse that ran next to the powerline trail. We didn't run it due to time and there's no telling how far it would go or how difficult it would get.

The list of things we (I) learned this weekend was:

1. EVERYBODY needs to start the trip with a full tank of gas. On a full day's excursion, most 4 cyl's will burn 10 gallons, V6's will burn 15 and V8's will burn 20. So carry extra if your outside these numbers.
2. Water was way down this year. (18" to 24") But you can find some deep holes crossing the trails
3. Colors will most likely be minimal due to the lack of rain.
4. A good CB is indespensable.

jim - kb8ymf

Oh, and #5, Trail leaders and explorers need to get their ham radio license for next year. I know I'm sounding like a broken record but I know Lucas and Keith could have used it on Sat for some of the stuff they ran into. I know we'll see more examples of this in a few weeks.

My feeling is that we have run the gamet for actual trails that provide a higher level challenge. I think that we have a variety of trails that will require 4 wheel drive for almost anyone.
For those looking for the more extreme, there are local play areas that will challenge most vehicles. However, these will not be the traditional trail that starts somewhere & comes out somewhere else. These trails were created through areas as the path of least resistance. Using PIW as an example, I am sure Bryce had fun and enjoyed the run. But it was not a challenge for his vehicle. So, when he runs something like PIW, he is there for the fun, friendship and just enjoying the day.
To be challenged, he will need to drive to a local group of skidder trails and stay close to that area. No different than driving to an old gravel pit for hill climbs. Or going to Silver Lake or the Mounds. But, the difference is that the skidder trails will present a higher level of challenge. Is this like going to Tellico or Moab??? No.

I look at the Spring Opener and DOA. These runs continue primarily as an excuse to get together with fellow wheelers for fun and good time.

GG should be the same thing with the added value of more diverse areas. We have scenic trails, mud, rocks, logs, up hill climbs and in some places, everthing lumped together.

I'm looking forward to GG this year!

Jim

Bryce, have you seen the rocks on the powerline north of Harmony creek?

The MSG guys went up that way last year and found a way on top of them but did not get a chance to explore further, maybe we can look at it more this year!

I checked out the pics on pirate and I am sure we can find that stuff where we go.

We also need to keep Perry Sound area in mind for a trip to Canada in the future.

Pat,
They added a new road for the new powerline on the west side of the older line.
The rocks on the south side of the powerline near Harmony creek have been obiterated into a road.
The rocks on the powerline north of Government Creek are the ones I think your talking about, right? Some guys on quads we talked to said they were a good trail. The map and previous exploration runs didn't give much indication of where it dumps out. You have to enter the trail right off Hwy 17 next to the buldozer that's at the bottom. Only tricky part right now is that's exactly where their stringing the lines at last weekend. The have the wire spool trailer parked right at the top of the regular powerline run that we've run. Just have to run it and see. I think Bryce is planning on doing that.

On the new trail ride subject:
I've got an open invitation from a friend of mine whose club that runs the Bobcaygen Jeep Jamboree to lead us around on a trail ride. It's on property under their control. It's many times tougher than the one we took on the United Trail ride (Green Mountain, and the Super Bowl) We should put that on the discussion list for next year.

Jim K, you know I like your Jeep. :P

Brian I have stated before you have a very nice CJ....that thing looks sweet.

Bryce to more I see your Geo the more I like it. You did a good job on the build, I can't wait to check it out in person....nice ride.

By the way Mike, you can bring dinner to my camp any time!
See you in a couple weeks.

Not sucking up, just letting him know he has a good looking rig....I just don't think I would fit comfortably in a Geo....so it's not really something for me. But a nice looking rig none the less.

Hey Mike,
If you remember, I fit in my old one @ 6'2". As does Bryce who is about as tall. I know I haven't seen you in a while.........we don't have to make a 'center seater' out of it for you to fit do we????, eh! :<))
Seriously, you'll have to find a way up. There is always an empty seat around some where.

Yep Jim a center seater is what I would need :P . I road with Ryan Primel in his Zuk a couple of times, and I am cramped in that thing....
