Here is the current issue that we as trail users might want to get involved in, I know I do and will send my letter in.
Please take action now! With Senate passage of the Transportation Equity Act, H.R. 3, the measure now goes to a conference committee where House and Senate conferees will work out the differences between the Senate and House passed measures. The House version of H.R. 3 provides $503 million for the Recreational Trails Program while the Senate provides for $336 million.
Please take the time to write your Senators and Congressman and let them know that you support funding RTP at the House-passed level.
Your voice needs to be heard so please write now!
Below is the sample letter:
Subject: Support the House-passed Funding Level for RTP
Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],
The House/Senate Conference Committee on H.R. 3, the Transportation Equity Act, could begin meeting in the coming days. I am writing you to urge the conferees to fund the Recreational Trails Program (RTP) at the funding level approved by the House of Representatives, $503 million over a six year period.
The Recreational Trails Program utilizes a small portion of the federal tax receipts attributable to off-highway recreational activities including ATV riding, motorcycling, snowmobiling and 4 X 4s for purposes of maintaining and improving recreational trails throughout the country. This program funds the development of trails for both motorized and non-motorized recreation. Literally millions of Americans benefit each year from this very successful program
The Federal Highway Administration's most recent estimate of the amount of tax revenue generated by off-highway recreational activities is more than $286 million annually. Investing a small program of this revenue in the Recreational Trails Program is an appropriate use of these monies.
The House-passed funding level for the RTP program should be included in the conference report for H.R. 3. Encourage the Senate/House conferees to do the right thing by approving $503 million for RTP funding.
Sincerely,
(Your Name)
