View Full Version : Helping with the Pig Gig
WhiteRhino

The Swamp Stompers have asked us for 2 things. I purposely put this in the general forum so that all GLFWDA members along with the Swamp Stompers can have input.
1) Host folks at OSTC. Pretty clear about this. We will need to get some volunteers when the time gets closer. Not much else to discuss yet.
2) Provide breakfast for the Pig gig attendees at the gig location. Either one or both days. This can be put on by a club, or a group of indy members. Since people are paying for their breakfast, a portion of the fee would go to the club or to GLFWDA as a fund raiser with the actual amount to be determined with the SS's if it works out. They are estimating 300 people. Is anyone or any club interested in taking on this project?

Why does everyone else get punnished because of someone elses irresponsible actions?

If I could explain it here publicly without fear of political / personal reprisal I would. Next time I see you we'll chat over a beverage.
I believe an arbitrator will ultimately be deciding if any one of us can get a day or two off :banghead:

Serving breakfast or helping at OSTC? If for breakfast, you will need to decide how many you need to accomplish your goal.
Did I mention that if 2 different groups do breakfast, they will judge who served the better meal?

No, the swamp stompers are not a club member of glfwda. But a few of their members are. The decision to work together is based on a win/win for all.

Is their club or indys a member of GLFWDA?
so the real answer would be yes, several members of Swamp Stompers 4X4 Club are indy members even though the club as a whole is not.
Sorry I haven't chimmed in sooner, been off a few weeks with very limited computer time.
I feel I should explain things a little better here.
There seems to have been some bad feelings directed at Swamp stomers for resons that where simply untrue. Last fall a couple of us fromt eh Swamp Stompers and a couple from GLFWDA got together and discussed some of this to try changing any bad attitudes on either side.
The Swamp Stompers were told that GLFWDA would like more involvement then just setting up a booth off to the side. We in turn said we could use additional help with some of the side things the happen durring the weekend. Skip seemed excited to get GLFWDA more involved and we all thought maybe having several people or even a couple clubs/groups within GLFWDA cook breakfast for everyone would be a good way to both help SS and let GLFWDA become more involved with this large event in the wheeling community. We all hope this can show all the bystanders that we want everyone to work together and that we are not trying to leave anyone out.
as for some of the other comments here, the "no dogs" rule was invoked this year not because of one bad apple, Last year we tried a dog are, but for a few reasons we didn't feel this would work at Beaver Trail. We still had complaints about the dogs, some of this being barking thru the night, but the bigger reason is that Beaver Trail is a small camp ground and we felt even that with the number of people that attended last year put in a smaller area would not be a good place for pets. Although some people's pets are great in crouds, some people think theirs are, but are not, and we don't want the gig to be where that person finds this out.
And yes Trail Fanatic, there will be more then just cooks needed to pull off a breakfast for 200-300 people :)

May 17th, 2008, 11:36 PM
I am hoping that we can get the GLFWDA on board for the Gig with helping out with breakfast. This idea was part of the original talks that we had last fall to get the two groups back together.
One of the problems with pets this year is the size of the campground. It will be a bit closer than last year, but there will also be some improvements for the event. One of these is more electricity, flush toilets, and SHOWERS!!! :thumb:
I think that those who attend, with all that we are working on as a group, will be pleased with the event. I look forward to being able to help the GLFWDA promote themselves at the event as well.
For those who don't know me, I am on the boards as Icemanii. I wheel a 1983 CJ7 and ride a motorcycle year round. I am currently the president of the Swamp Stompers, as Swampjeep was a bit preoccupied with someones wedding. :poke: I was the one who first approached the GLFWDA about working together and am glad to see how things are working out. If there are questions about the Gig, I will be glad to answer them for you.

OK time to start firming up our list. I read back through the thread to start the list of names, but over the last few weeks I have talked to several more in person, by e-mail, etc. There were also some maybes, won't add you until you chime in again. We probably need 12 or so for breakfast. If you are camping at OSTC instead of the Pig Gig we can still use your help if you don't mind a short drive at dawn. We also have a spot in the vendor area to set up an information booth, if you are not an early riser or the smell of scrambled eggs at 6:30am makes you gag, we could use a couple extra folks to man the booth for about an hour each to answer questions, hand out information, etc. If you aren't comfortable answering questions etc, let me know and I can team you up with someone.

I'll plan on heading over to OSTC after helping to eat breakfast and bum a ride just to see the park, then eat lunch, then head back over to the Gig and sleep behind the booth for a few hours.

I plan on helping with breakfast, I have been since SoFO asked for some volenteers to help. So, I'll be there for that and whatever else but hope to do some wheeling at OSTC or where ever I guess. I am not reserving anything for room or campsite, so we'll see how that goes. It may just be one long day trip forme.
Anyway, I just need to know what is needed from me, where i need to be at what time. That is all.

I got up this morning at 6:30 and it was still quite dark. On the date of the Gig it will be even darker. I hope this is in a kitchen or pavilion because lighting would be convenient.

It is by the bathroom area where there is lighting. Plus I think a couple of the swampers are bringing some lights.

Not sure yet - I made some new friends who have a camp kitchen set up to feed 150 boy scouts at a time. Swamp Stompers have a couple of coffee urns, but if anyone has 20-100 cup urn (or two) they could bring it would help.

Yessir - no help will be refused, I added a place holder on my helper list at #12 for SoFO. I could use a couple hands early, or if someone wants to help but isn't an early riser we can use extra hands for cleanup so we can all get out and hit the trails!
There is also a rumor that we may have a few eggs to crack Friday night , and a few homebrews & assorted leftover birthday beers sitting in the cooler taking up space. Might need help then as well.

thats funny i can never make enough home brew? everyone drinks it all on me.
for the record nothing can naturally grow in beer that can kill your friends!
it could possibly make them a little sick though.

Joe got it - 6:30am Saturday start time, only requirement is your happy smiling face.
The Barstow's "Road Kill Grill" will be set up near the bathhouse where there are lights and electrical outlets, my campsight should also be nearby. Cracking eggs & mixing batter Friday night while sampling some "Spottie's Ale" varieties bottled 1998-2004 will start sometime after dinner also at the kitchen area. Saturday is when we need help for sure, Friday night is just a good excuse to sit around the fire and drink beer.
Anyone interested in taking pics and doing a brief write-up for the Boondocker?
Uniform of the day is GLFWDA apparel or your GLFWDA-affiliated club's apparel if you have it. If you don't, don't sweat it.
I think that's all I know for now, please feel free to PM me or send me an e-mail (treasurer@glfwda.org) with questions or if I missed something important.

With the Road Kill Grill and Sue's 3-burner (Thanks Sue!), I think we have enough cook space. I acquired a stack of full/deep foil roaster pans w/racks from my wife's office recently plus the griddles and boiler on the kitchen plus Sue's griddle so I think we have enough pots/pans etc. I'll pick up paper supplies (plates, cups, napkins, utensils) later this week.
WHAT I THINK WE MIGHT BE LACKING:
20-50 cup coffee urns (Swamp Stompers have a couple, figure we could use a couple more)
8-20 gal jug(s) for OJ
That's all I can think of right now.

Thanks! I'm still up in the air right now, this morning my cars head gasket took a dump. So, tonight I pulled it all apart, I've left off with the new gasket installed, but my wife left to go "shopping" and I haven't seen her in 2 hours....the kids are covered in oil and the cats keep trying to eat the mouse nest in the intake manifold....so, I'm not sure if the car will be running or not to make it on Saturday.

And if you want dedicated helpers for your next event, get the gang from SoFO. Due to a miscommunication about our start time, when I arrived in the kitchen area at 6:30 there were already 1/2 dozen SoFO members hard at work over 2 grills, about 3/4 way through a 15# box of bacon. They had arrived at 5:45am and went to work.
After the food was cooked, they disappeared into the night......:ninja:
