DNR Hosting Public Meetings to Review Rules
for Permission to Use State Lands
A series of three public meetings in June will give Michigan citizens the
opportunity to weigh in on proposed changes in procedures for groups or
individuals using state-owned lands for events and commercial operations.
Historically, the Department of Natural Resources has allowed certain
limited, organized events or commercial operations on state lands as long as
they were compatible with the management and purpose of the lands, were
consistent with DNR mission and policies, and did not conflict with other
users of the land.
Under the proposed changes, an individual or group conducting an organized
event or commercial operation would apply to use state-owned lands
administered by the DNR at least 90 days in advance of the proposed date of
the activity. The DNR would review the application and issue permits for
certain types of uses for state-owned surface lands.
"Under this revised procedure, we will have more uniform administration of
organized events and commercial operations on state lands, and we will help
ensure that public resources continue to be protected," said Scott Whitcomb,
public lands specialist. "The consistent administration of public land will
allow the DNR to more effectively manage its land, and make sure there are
no conflicts between different users."
Three public meetings for Michigan citizens to review the new procedures
have been scheduled. They are:
* Marquette: 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, June 7, at the Cherry Creek Elementary
School Gymnasium located at 1111 Ortman Road in Marquette;
* Cadillac: 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 8, at McGuires Resort located at
7880 Mackinaw Trail in Cadillac;
* Lansing: 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, June 9, at the Best Western Midway Hotel's
Symposium Room located at 7711 W. Saginaw Highway in Lansing's Delta
Township.
Persons unable to attend one of the public meetings may submit their
comments in writing by sending them to the DNR Wildlife Division, Attn:
Public Lands Specialist, P.O. Box 30444, Lansing, MI 48909 or by e-mailing
them to DNR-commercialoperations@michigan.gov. The deadline for written
comments is July 9, 2005.
The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and
enjoyment of the state's natural resources for current and future
generations.
