Well Kids I tried to keep this a secret so I could bring it up to Sofo's trail clean up on May 17th and surprise everyone, but word has leaked out. so I thought Id just post up.
I don’t have a lot of pics from the start but not a whole lot has changed.
Some may know I sold My built up Rubi last year and bought a Porsche. fun to drive but I knew Id keep my eyes open for a winter/spare vehicle. I was thinking Sami or Tracker or Toyota pick up. my only real criteria was 4x4 and 20-25 MPG.
So Im cruisin craigslist and see a vague ad for a 92 Toyota pick up needs work
but it’s in my home town so I grab Shawn and go for a look see.
Well it’s a strange set up. young guy, says hes getting a divorce and the ex is gonna push it out into the street. He has to text her to open the garage.
Im feelin bad for the guy. anyway there it is under six years on junk......
a fairly clean 1992 Toyota Pick Up, 4x4, ext cab, covered in six years of dirt and sawdust. hmmmmmmm not bad lookin.. so whats the scoop I ask?
Well the kid tells me He bought it in 2000 and drove it for about a year, blew the motor, his buddy had a 89 22r with 30k on it so they decided to throw it in, and being young they figure they will just throw a carb on it and a fuel pump and go on their way. They got the motor in around 2006 brand spankin new holly 350 cfm carb, Mallory Hy-Fire ignition module, holley fuel pump, and a sweet adjustable regulator..
new radiator, water pump etc... they got it to start but it ran rough and they threw out the ECM and engine wiring harness because they wouldn’t need it..
riiiighhht...got stumped on how to wiring the ALT. and gave up.
anyway fast forward, divorce, push that POS into street...OK
dash is in pieces, engine is a mess..wires everywhere but its clean dinged up a bit some small bubbles started frame is super clean, everything mechanically seem to be there...
so now the big question...HOW MUCH??
It has to be gone this week or she’s pushing it in the street (contain yourself Brian) so he says $300.00, he just wants his money for the crab and fuel pump... After nearly fainting we run to the ATM grab Shawn’s CJ and toe it 4 blocks to my house..
next day we rip all the strange wiring check it all out, put it on the battery charger, it all seems OK? fire it up..starts right up but does run rough.
we shut it down and go to work..
Vacuum lines are a mess. two lines on the Distributor running off manifold vacuum..some research show one is for high-altitude so plug one and run one to ported vacuum..start it up rough but much better, adjust the carb...better but rough.....ok check the distributor..of course its off a tooth!
start it and re adjust everything...PERFECT!!!
Check all fluids... everything seems good and fresh!! oooops no transfer case fuild..bone dry...always good to check!
quick trip to Murrarys get an air filter and gear oil...need a throttle cable..check some antifreeze and 2 qts of oil...need an exhaust so a thrush turbo and a few pieces of 2" pipe and a hanger kit..some other odds and ends... total spent 82.00
Install everything; runs great...seems to good to be true two days work
a total investment of $382.00??
Hells YEA!! lets drive it to the gas station and filler up.. the old gas in the tank stinks!!
get to the station filler up...get 15 gal in and .......hey whats that noise??
sounds like fluid spilling?? WHOA!!!!! gas everywhere... Shawn and I Duke of Hazzard it into the truck and head for home!! seems when they skillfully sawzalled the fuel lines they did run new line from the feed to the carb but left the vent line cut near the frame rail.. one 5/16 bolt later the hemorrhaging stops..
next day some fuel line and a T ran the vent back to the engine compartment.. good to go...
OK next is the Alternator...a bit more tricky lots of boring internet research and a trip to the junk yard...$10.00 for the alternator harness..install it
perfection!!!
fuel gauge sorta works the volt meter work but nothing else.. function driving Toy??
YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT!!
total invested...just under $400.00
Next on the list
Wiring Harness and ECU $150.00
(why not get everything working)
Antenna $ 20.00
Radio $100.00
Tires ????????
so there you have it
More to come
