I?m looking for a Dana 44 so I can swap out my factory 35. Right now I have a 35 w/3.07 gears but I run 33" tires and I don?t want to lock the deferential and break the axle shafts. If someone has a Dana 44 for sale for a TJ contact me. A 44 w/4.10 gears would be optimal, so I would only have to re-gear the front.

You are pretty safe locking a D35 with only 33" tires. I have run a locked D35 and didn't break it until I was running 35's and over 300 hp. And then it took me being stupid to break it. A locked D35 will hold up quite well for occasional wheelin with 33"s.

The bigger issue (as you mentioned) is the gear ratio. Not to mention that the cost of a locker is about the same money you would spend to put in a D44 or Ford 9".

Corey, your best bet would be a Ford 8.8. You could find them with 4.10 gears and then just regear your front. Plus you gain disc brakes. Setting up a 8.8 in a TJ is a little involved, but contact Ironman(Pat) I talked to him before about it and his price was really reasonable for welding everything up on the 8.8 and mounting it.

Also look in the for sale section on MJ alot. I see people selling factory D44's out of Cherokees.

thanks for the advice, if I could get away with using the dana 35 for now w/out breaking axle shafts w/ a locker thats what I would like to do. I?ve already had a few people contact from MJ about the 44, but I will have to check out the ford 8.8.
