A couple friends and I went yesterday to explore this area in Grand Haven know as the old Gravel Pits. Apparently this area is a "designated" recreation area, but usually closed to full size vehicles and ATV's. But this year they have a "Designated Winter Roadway" that trucks/cars can use to access a couple of the lakes for ice fishing and don't have to walk so far.

I was told there are roughly 1500 acres here! Years ago this area was open to all uses, but because of negligate use by trucks, tearing up the land, parties, etc. they shut off access to full size vehicles and ATV's. What an opportunity for GL to do a little homework and help the ORV community try and get a little chunk of this "Rec" area back..and with time maybe more. Our guide has wheeled there for many years and knows the area very well. He said that if just a small area could be opened up for off road use, it would be a stepping stone for other areas.

Just thought you might be interested. If you need more info, I can put you in touch with our guide and go from there.

It's not real easy for me to get there, but I would be available for helping with this. Do we have any Westsiders willing to help? What is the history of the land is it State land or left over from industry/private use? Where is this located so I could search maps?

We don't really have to many westsiders that could do the leg work. But a thought would be maybe contact Two Trackers 4x4 club or Sundowners and see if they could help. Both clubs are large and based out of the west side. I know some of the Two Trackers have been working hard trying to keep west side trails open. DoubleJ has some contacts with the Two Trackers.......just a thought.
