What specifically do you mean by 'wheel on?'
If it's cross country, No. Unless it's St. Helen Motorsport Area in which case you'll need an ORV sticker and cross country travel is OK.
If it's on a road that requires 4WD and it doesn't have ORV Route triangles, No.
If it's any other type of designated State Land, i.e. State Recreation Area, State Game Area, State Park, No
If it's purely 'State of Michigan' land using 2WD, Yes.

That's our big dilemma.

From the get go............. If you need 4 wheel drive in Ortonville, you are illegal.

I wheeled there 30 years ago and know about every inch of the area.

If you go with them, expect to pay a ticket.

Most likely ticket AND impound. Oakland County boys won't take to kindly to illegal use as it's been illegal for ever in Oakland County. Previous acts of wheeling were just not the highest priority due to the rural nature and the population density.
Unless they are wheeling on private land AND have written permission I would just lay low and stay clear of the area.
I would be interested in knowing what area they think is legal. As WhiteRhino pointed out there's nothing there. I expect they are thinking State Recreation Area property or State Game Area is fair game, it's not.

The only thing down in that area is the state recreation area, which is off limits and I have not seen any trails back there not bermed or marked as closed to motorized traffic. Some of the roads through there are marked "closed" although I have never been harassed by the DNR while driving in to hunt. They don't plow those roads, and when the snow is deep some of those hilly roads get slick.
