IOSCO COUNTY ORV EFFORT BEGINS

Advertisements have been placed in the five newspapers that are available in Iosco County, informing county ORV riders of three informational meetings regarding the possibility of an ORV ordinance. Those being 2-15, G's Pizza Conference Room, Oscoda, 2-16, East Tawas City Hall and 2-17, Plainfield Township Hall, Hale. All will begin at 7:00 p.m.
Intent of these meetings are to inform local ORV users of some of the most current statistics about the sport, to give a complete understanding and intent of the Ogemaw ordinance and how it may be applied in Iosco county. In addition, procedure will be explained on the steps necessary by officials to adopt such an ordinance.
Support has been high among county ORV users and much interest shown by various elected officials.

I have been getting the updates from Dick Raney, the chairman of the ORV advisory board, as to how these meetings are going.

He says they are going very smoothly and a lot of townships are on board with it and it is going to the county road commission next to see what they have to say.

If this happens in Iosco county the plan is to keep it migrating into other northern counties, this started in Ogemaw and it passed.

If these counties realize the economic impact of quads and bikes being able to access food and gas and even shelter in the form of riders being able to go from town to town without their tow vehicle and spend the night, then these places would be more likely to accept us a source of revenue from having events in their community.

This could possibly lead to something even bigger such as a trail linking communities together without ever having to hit blacktop.

So if you have the chance to promote this effort by all means do. If you live in a county that is looking at going this direction attend one of these meetings and lend your support!

Thanks!
Pat

IOSCO UPDATE

The issue of having a favorable ORV ordinance in Iosco county progresses to the next level.

With good attendance and no negative comments at any of the three public information meetings regarding an ORV ordinance for Iosco County, things look favorable.

On Monday, February 21st, county resident Dick Ranney, gave a presentation to the Iosco County Board of Parks and Recreation. The outcome of that meeting was to schedule a March 7th, special Parks Board meeting for county officials whom would be directly involved in such an ordinance. Included in the invitation were township supervisors, various police agencies serving within the county, officials of United States Forest Service and Michigan Department of Natural Resources. In addition, officials from the Iosco County Road Commission.

To be announced, an opportunity for public input at a hearing designed to give county residents a comment period. In the meantime, Ranney urges county residents to express their views at their township board meetings and to sign one of the many petitions within their township.

Absentee property owners wishing to support the ordinance, are urged to send a letter to the township in which they own property, using the address on the tax statement. In addition, they may send a letter to Iosco County Board of Commissioners at 420 W. Lake Street, Tawas City, Michigan 48763

A strong desire has been expressed by some officials to have such an ordinance in place for the summer tourist season, however, there are concerns about the many obstacles to overcome, but not insurmountable for the 05 season.
