As far as the proposal Rowe presented...I thought it was better than I expected. Other than the first 15 minutes of their movie showed more paint getting scraped off the roofs of vehicles than rubber off tires! http://www.greatlakes4x4.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif
Usually we have a harder time conviencing government and land managers we want challenges that are more than casual walks in the park.
If you look at the presentation Great Lakes put together you'll see that we tried to balance and quantify the course difficulties as Rowe was pretty fixated on competition courses like Donner and WeRock. It was apparent that GCP&R let them have free reign with respect to content of the facility. For instance, they showed a pavilion amidst the difficult courses. While that might be nice, it was noted that users come to the faciilty to use it. If some group had that area reserved it would not set well as users believe they should have access to the entire facility without someone having exclusive use if it.
I for one, would like to see our hard earned money put into rocks instead of a pavillion also.
One of the engineers with Rowe is also a member of London and Area Jeep Owners Club out of Ontario. He also brought in some old friends of mine who put on the Southern Ontario Rock Crawling Championships. They confirmed the audiences suggestions on course content and trying to maxamize use of the natural terrain.
If there's one thing that dissapointed me it was the placement of the courses. The Master Plan show the development in the north east corner of the property in the area known as the dust bowl. It's a relatively flat area and the 'terrain' for the rocks will have to be constructed. The road along the railroad tracks will be improved once the powerline relocation project is complete. The location is not movable unless the Master Plan is revised. Last time that took 3+ years. Not time I'd like to waste again.
I passed out the GLFWDA Rock Course Design guidelines to those present. I've also attached it here for those who fell asleep last night and didn't make it. http://www.greatlakes4x4.com/images/smilies/poke.gif
Great Lakes would like to welcome your comments on the proposal that Rowe is going to work with. Rowe indicated there would be future reviews before the final bell sounds and they start digging holes and piling rocks. Optimistically we could see rocks before the end of 2008, next year.
Thanks to all who showed up and commented.
