Well I was finally going to get my bow out and pursue some whitetail deer in Hale over the weekend. The plans were to meet up with my friend Don and his uncle Mike on thursday and head up to hale. On friday my son was going to drive down for Lake Superior State and hunt with us for the weekend. We didn't get up to hale until about 11:00 p.m. and by the time we got unpacked and set up it was quite late. We decided to sleep in the first morning and go put our stands up after noon. So we did as planned and headed out in the afternoon, found some promising trees to hang our stands and headed back to camp to shoot the bows. My son showed up at about 3:30 and we got him unpacked and headed out for the hunt. Well a steady rain had us coming in a little early but no big deal we still had the rest of the weekend. At 3:30 a.m. a loud knock came from the front door. It was Scott the land owner and he was looking for my son. Campus security had tracked us down and needed to talk to my son because his room mate had gone out hunting and had not returned. They were wondering if Nick knew where he hunted so they could send people out looking. After several phone calls to police, friends, and family Nick and I decided we should head back up to the u.p. and help look for Josh. We were on the road by 4:00 a.m. and it was raining and foggy and deer all along the road. When we got by kinross we got a call from the Sheriffs office and they wanted us to meet them at a gas station near by to look over some maps. They gave up a map and said they believed he was somewhere in the lake superior state forrest. We drove trails, seasonal roads, and orv routes all day long. We had drived down to the end of a trail and had to turn around at a dead end. When we went to turn the truck burried itself to the axle in sand. I tried 4wd but the truck would not engage. I had taken my back pack for hunting with me and grabbed my gerber folding knive and cut a large branch down to try to use a leverage. No luck the truck was not going to move. I found a rachet strap in Nicks truck and cut a piece of the branch off. I ran the strap through the rim and I put the piece of log in front of the tire and strapped it on with the strap. When the tire turned over it lifted the truck back up on solid ground. I took a half hour to get the truck unstuck in the wind and rain. We had at this time been in the truck for 14 hours straight. It was time to take a break so we went in to sit down and have a hamburger. When we got back out to the truck we got some great news that Josh had been found and that he was fine. He was hunting a new area and came down from the tree a little later than he should have. He got turned around in the woods and was lost. He picked a spot and settled down for the night. When morning came he started walking and found an orv trail and that led him to a road which is where he was found. We were all releived that he was fine. So we headed back to Hale and got back at 9:30 p.m. I had had 3 hours sleep friday night and an exhausting day. I decided to sleep in sunday morning as I new I had a busy week ahead. So my weekend of hunting ended up one rainy evening of hunting and a search and rescue misson. The good points were that Josh was ok and I traveled some great off road trails that I now hope to visit with my jeep.
