I am looking at a scout, actually my little brother is doing the hard work for me (I am 500+ miles away from it). I have a VIN and searched on-line. I know it is a 1980, has a gas engine, I believe the 345, built in Ft. Wayne (same as my truck). I am trying to confirm the model # which is the first four digits.

Sorry, I let my service manual go with my 1978, years ago.

Good Luck with the project.

This is what I have for what the VIN means...

Digit 1: Year code, starting in '75 or '76 (E=75, F=76, G=77, H=78, J=79, K=80)
Digit 2: Austre code (which means extremely plain) 1=austre , 0 =standard
Digits 3&4: 05=SSII, 06= Scout II, 09= Terra, 10=Traveler
Digit 5: Engine code (2=Gas, 3=Diesel)
Digit 6: Year code repeated
Digit 7: Plant code (G = Fort Wayne, all Scouts were built there)
Digit 8: Shift code, I think.
Last 5 Digits: Sequential S/N starting with 10001
This is all off the top of my head so I would have to look at my book at home about digit 8.

from Dan Larson graham-lee@mail.tds.netSo....
K = 1980
0 = Standard
06 = Scout II
2 = Gas
K = 1980
G = Fort Wayne
D = ?
17897 = S/N
