View Full Version : Should we bump up GG one week

Ironman

By moving Gitchee Gumee a week earlier we would move away from the opener of MI bow season and away from the Loonie run and allow us to participate in the Northwood Auto show.

The color will not be as prevalent as in the past.

As far as color goes we could leave it and still miss the peak time. Color is always just a bonus. We never know what it will be like till we get there. But moving one week should make a difference as far as how many people can come. Remember that a lot of people have more then one hobby that they do, dates can conflickt without us even trying to. But we do have to remember that cost for the people going up and prerunning should be thought of also. It will help us now that DOA has been moved up a couble of weeks also.

I think this is a great idea, that way we won't have to miss hunting.

I think that the color is a bigger bonus than you are giving credit.

It also makes it a little tougher to schedule.
We would have:

DOA
One week later, Labor Day. (which we go to Canada to scout trails)
Three weeks later, GG.
If we go early to GG to scout trails, there is only 2 weeks in between.

This makes it a little tough to get time off.

We have never had a conflict with the Looney run. In fact, several of us ran into some of them at the gas station and had good conversation.

As far as bow season, I recognize the conflict but I think most bow hunters will not suffer too much.

I am sure that there are members that will not make GG that can be at the auto show.

WhiteRhino makes a couble of good points but remember that DOA has already been changed. It will be two weeks sooner this year because of school starting so early for a lot of schools. It will give us more time before Labor Day weekend.

I will confirm that DOA will be earlier next year. It'll be the weekend before the Dream Cruise & August NASCAR race. That makes it Aug 12-14.

I think a week earlier would be fine. That would make it Sept 23-25, right? (October starts on a Saturday in 05)

Carrie would like it because our Anniversary is 9/30, so I'd be home for it in 05.

That would also give a little bit of time between GG & the Color Tour.

Moving it would also make it so that GG, the quarterly, and the color tour aren't 3 weekends in a row. Thats why I missed the color tour. no time to fix the jeep and get caught up on house stuff. I'm all for it.

I personally would like it later....it would be cooler out, no hot days. It would probably be wetter which is better....

But the whole hunting thing gets in the way. Especially up there!

I'll click the move up a week button too.

I would personally like to see it moved up a week (or possibly more) also.

I understand that some people like to see the fall colors, but I think that most people go for the wheeling, and not to look at the leaves. They can look at leaves anywhere during the color season without having to drive to Canada.

It would also possibly help us to avoid the colder weather that makes it somewhat miserable for the folks that have to camp, which may in turn help increase the number of participants. This is a fundraiser for the Association, after all!

It would also eliminate the dilema of forcing some people to choose between attending GG or the Looney Run. Heck, if they can afford it, they could go to both runs if they wanted to!

And, on a personal note, it would no longer conflict with my second daughter's birthday!

It certainly helps moving up DOA.

Lucas is right about the temperature. And he camps!!! For those of us that are involved in a lot of the trail clearing work, cooler is better.

T-way, saying that you can see color at home would negate anyone going to the Troll's color tour. We have color in southeast Michigan also. It is the actual scenery and diversity that counts. Since I am in Canada at least 4 times per year, scheduling to see the color is a plus!

At the end of the day, we will be there regardless of the date.

Jim....you're right (as usual), and that is kind of what I was pointing out!!

When all is said and done, I still believe that most people will still go to GG (if their schedules allow) regardless of the date, because they go for the wheeling and not the leaves!! The color is just a nice bonus (if you can see it through the rain and snow!).

And you're right about the Troll's Color Tour too! But we don't necessarily put the Tour on for the downstaters, although we certainly appreciate those that make the trip north to share the experience with us!!

We put it on primarily for the local folks with the stock SUVs, in an attempt to get them off the pavement and onto the dirt 2-tracks as an intro to the world of off-the-pavement fun! So they don't really have to "leave home" to enjoy it!

So far moving it up a week is winning.

I for one do not want to miss the northwood show due to the fact we networked with some priceless contacts at this years show and I would hate to loose that opportunity to do so next year. It was well worth the $300 entry fee and the time spent talking with the public and auto dealers and the movers and shakers in the auto business.

For next years show I have already started a dialogue with the organizers for us to include an exibhibition, maybe a rock crawl course on site.

I have missed the bow opener for the last 6 years since being involved with GG and will miss it again for 05 due to the auto show or GG whichever happens that weekend but one of these days I will get back out there for it. But I do know we would have at least a few more attend GG if we moved it up a week.

I do think that one of the major draws is the color and I know that it wont be turning by the last weekend of Sept. To me that is the only drawback to moving GG.

Thanks to everyone for voting!

Well,
Since my wife is a big part of my wheelin and she likes the color, our vote is to keep it the same.

I voted to keep it the same. But it doesn't really matter. The bugs are gone either weekend. I do like the colors, though!

Back to top, lets see if we can get more votes! And give the membership a chance to find out this might happen so they can adjust their schedule.

you will have to bring it up in one of the boondockers or the next quartly meeting there only about 15 members that use this forum day to day

I would not vote to change the week just because someone else is there that weekend. Reason being, other folks from other organizations will be there whatever weekend you pick. Your always going to run into other groups. The key is to find new areas to enjoy up there. Believe me, there are thousands of trails and I've yet to run into anyone on the trail in the last few years. The weather is not a reason to move it either. Over the last 22 years that I've been going to Canada we've have temps from 70's to snow. Color is nice but, I think only a handful of times have the colors been near 100%. Those times it usually snowed at least one of the days! If you wanna to wheel, your gonna go no matter what weekend it is.....So....

One more reason I might not have mentioned was the fact that the Northwood Auto show is the first weekend in Oct for 05 and we will be having a booth there again. If GG were to stay the same I and Kim would not be able to go.

So we would loose a trail leader and a organizer. Both of which are hard to come by.

Amen to that. I'll do registration again, but thats about all I have time for. I'm not saying we move it just because Pat/Kim, but its going to be hard to replace what they do for the event.

There are several factors to consider in this.

One of them being the suggestion box comment cards we recieved at thsi years event. These cards sugested moving the event for several reasons not just the conflict between having 2 events up there at the same time. The main reason was the Bow opener is very important to a lot of people so they have not been able to attend since the very begining of GG. It would be nice if those folks were able to come and not miss their other chosen sport, I feel for them as I havent been able to hunt the opener since being involved with GG for the last 6 years.

It does look like the majority of the votes so far have been for moving it to the last full weekend of Sept.

We will be discussing this more at the trail ride committee meeting prior to the Jan. quarterly. Trail ride meeting starts at 10:00 am

I think the move would help elminate some of the friction that seems to exist between GG and the loonie run

WhiteRhino
December 19th, 2004, 09:02 PM
I am curious about the friction that I keep hearing about. I ran into a bunch of the Loonie run group at the gas station and it was the most friendly conversation a group could have:
"How was your run?"
"Where did you go?"
"We had some great stuff."

On and on.

I have never heard of any actual "conflicts" nor anyone bumping into each other on the trails.
I understand that they run out of one of the bars in town. But, so what?

So, my question is: What exactly are the conflicts?

Is it just 2 different groups running under somewhat different guidelines?
Are we putting too much stock into rumors?

Roadhouse

Jim, the only conflict I can see, is what members of that group have said about us on the internet. I don't think they like us, and have a real problem with us coming up there riding and tearing up their public land. (not that we are tearing it up, but thats what they have said)

To be honest with you, I don't think it would matter when we ran up there.....I still think they will say bad things about us. :<img src=:" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

And by "They" I'm not refering to all members of that club or their guest, but a select few who have a problem with us.
