Just checking to see how much interest there is.
It would be in late February in the St Helen area.

Bruce,
I would only be willing to camp if the following conditions exist:
Electricity so I can blast my heaters.
Showers, because I do not function dirty.

Otherwise, I would hotel it.

It's very doubtful we'd find those anywhere in the area in Feburary.

I'd just get up real early, drive down, wheel and drive home. I've never wheeled St. Helen's area, will there be separate stocker and mod rides planned?

Yes, we'll do every thing we can to accomadate all. But one thing that makes this type of run interesting but also difficult to plan is that we don't know what the weather will bring. We could get a foot or two of snow and stockers might be really challenged, we could have no snow, it could be cold and icy, it could be warn, wet, and slopy. We won't know until then.

That's right!!!!!!
If we have the same amount of snow as last year, you'll be lookin at the behind of the Rhino!

In reality Paul, other than super deep snow, all of the trails can be run with a stock Jeep. It is typical Michigan 2 tracks with some hills mixed in.

I took the wifes stock Cherokee out last year with good tires in over 12" of snow and made it without a problem. I'd be up for it if conditions permit the use of a near stock Jeep with the great equalizer (a winch). If I thought I'd need the winch to much I'd just ride shot gun with someone else and be the trail photographer.

Either way it sounds like fun. I'd even promise not to fall asleep if I was riding with some one.

Hey Bruce,

We could do a 3rd or 4th annual UP Spring Opener run in March!!! I'm not sure if you were there for the 2003 one when it was....oh, 0 degrees and were in a popup with no heat....water flash froze to everything including the mufflers :D

I'm up for a run, but after that one winter campout GL had a few years ago when it registered like -10 out !!!! I will not camp!! I had a +30 deg. sleeping bag and a blanket and no heaters......morning was the worst! I swear my pee was frozen inside me! I'm standing there for like 5 minutes trying to pee but I had so many factors preventing it from happening....-10 outside...I'm probably near hypothermia...did I say it was cold??? I drank too much beer the night before.....so its a cold morning beer pee.....I had to weight the pros and cons of peeing in my sleeping bag because its SOOOOOO darn cold and you can't really feel anything anyways, so a nice warm .......

Sorry, OT

Lucas

I'm sure we'd be able to find a few Troll's that would like to go play in the snow but I'm not sue about the camping thing. I for one like HEAT!

I think the RV will staying at home for this one. I don't think there are too many campgrounds open with electricity in that area that time of year. Hotels are nice that time of year.

I have used the RV with it's 2 furnaces in the winter before. They work overtime and would kill the batteries in no time or require use of the generator constantly. They are not very well insulated.

Okay heres my outlook on what I think a winter campout should be. If we do it, then it has to be a campout....no one in motels. YOu head out for the trails from the campspot, not head into town and wait for people at the motel.

Just my thoughts....I say maybe plan the sanctioned trailride around a motel. Then for use hard core stupid people, who are wiling to camp in -10 degree weather, do another trip.

Go for it Mike......... without me!
I am either in the motor home or a motel. Call me a sissy if you like.
(I know you would anyway!)

I assure you that if we do this that the trail ride will leave from the camping area, not the hotel.

And as of now sanctioning does not appear to be an option given our current insurance situation.

Every other event I have attended, GL sanctioned or not, people stay where they want. Camping, hotels, friends homes, rental cabins, camping in friends yards, vacation homes, cabins, etc., etc. I don't see that where we stay will make a difference. It is the event that counts.

OK, Bruce, I know you are just getting a feel about interest for a winter run, but I am going to venture a little more information that some may not realize.

This run was suggested as possibly being the 4th GL sanctioned trail ride event for the 05 season. This will fulfill a commitment for a 4th event on an insurance policy GL may get for the year. Noting in stone yet. However, if this is the case, there will be a $300 rider (give or take) to cover the insurance for the event. The event should be more than just riding the trails at St. Helens. There will be a fee to participate. You will have to be a GL member, or pay the $5 event fee (which will still be in effect in February).

JoAnn and I are officially commiting to this event. We will pay what ever portion of the rider fee is required of us to make this official. We also will pay our portion of whatever fees are associated with any other part of this event.

Bruce, if I misunderstood the purpose of this thread, let me know. I will apologize and delete this post so there will not be any other confusion.

Oh, and my point for this post would be that we should not be required to stay in a campground for the weekend.

OK, so if the insurance does not come through and this is not a GL event, then I am still going and still staying at a hotel. We can meet anywhere Bruce desires.

Depending one when and what the weather was , its possible we would make the long track to st helen to wheel with you characters <_<

Cold is not an issue for us , we ride snow machine and have the duds to do the job in the cold .

I still cant bieleve i use to ice fish on Muscong Bay in the winter , if seen -50 actual temp up there

Yes Pete, you got it right. I just wanted to make sure there was enough interest in this type of event to go forward with it and there looks like there is as long as we don't require people to camp. I suspected that might be the case, thats why I gave the choices I did.

But until we "(do #2) or get off the pot" on this insurance issue theres no guarantee that there will be any sanctioned events next year. As it stands right now, I think I was told that we would have to apply for a permit for this event at least 90 days before the event which if we're looking at having it in late Feburary we would have to get our application in by late November.

Time is against us, and under our current rules... no insurance = no permit = no sanctioning. It's as simple as that.

BTW pete, I think it was $400 per event for insurance.

Just a little info for the permit part of this "event". You have to start the paper work at least 90 days before but the DNR will and has worked with us thru the whole thing. With the insurance thing, the more events we can have the better. The rider costs will go down with more events. It doesn't hurt anything to at least get the paper work rolling with the DNR. Victor can help you out with all of the details on this as he does it for our club. If it doesn't happen you'll just be out a litttle time, paper work and maybe a $75.00 application fee.
As for where any one sleeps, who cares as long as we all have a great time. I know it wouild be great if we all could camp out but for some health issues will not permitt us to do so.
I really hope this winter event comes to life this year.

Sorry for my last post about camping, and once again like many things said on the net I came across the wrong way.

About 4-5years ago, a bubby and I talked about doing a wintercamp...with just your Jeep and tent. No campers, tow rigs or whatever. Just roughing it out in the woods. Ride from camp and back to camp. Well about 3 years ago, we planned one. We didn't stick the the original rules, and let campers and tow rigs out in the woods(which is fine). But the worst part about that event besides the -10 weather, was driving in town to a motel to meet everyone not camping. We were camped right next to trails.

Last year the event feel apart, because people couldn't get their tow rigs and campers out in the woods. SamiRick and I talked about doing just a campout this year for whoever wanted to go. But I have lost touch with Rick, so we haven't worked on anything.

Now if we are going to sanction a trailride, then lets us use SnoBlind or Trolls opening for examples. Plan the event around a motel(hall?), where we can have a dinner set up at night and awards, plus most people can stay there. So if we did a sanctioned ride for camping, I believe we would have people spread out everywhere. Where would we do a dinner or awards? Or have a warm place for registration?

I'm gonna stop now, before I dig myself a bigger hole. :D Oh and for the record, I'll do whatever event we have.....and help the plan it.

Pete don't worry I'm some what a softie also, staying in a motel for the color tour.

I'm all for camping this winter, but if my wife and kids want to go, I'll be at the Quality Inn poolside :D
