I have been discussing the solid axle swap with a number of better educated people than I. Of all the conversions being done to an H2, no one has done a solid axle swap yet. I am looking to learn from their mistakes and do it in time (hopefully before I bust the front diff again). It's on my to do list, but I don't want to be the guinea pig.

heres a tidbit of info for you to go on. this axle is a high pinion (stronger than a low pinion in a front application) it has kingpins which most feel are stronger than ball joints. it is a drivers side drop.

this axle has everything going for it for your swap. a chevy and dodge are a passenger side diff and also low pinion. a newer ford axle has ball joints and a metric lug pattern if you actually get the 60... others are a 50 and its basically a dana 44 and i wouldnt waste my time with it.

its this axle or a custom built one by currie, dynatrac, sunray... your choice

ya its the shiznit of front 60's, if it sits around for a wile and i get the money ill snap it up. but at that price it wont last long!! i just missed out on a hi pin 60 79 ford tube, no internals it went for 300.00$ on escam(ebay) i bid 250.00$ and it held a while. but just b4 the auction closed i got out bid as usual.

I run a kingpin 79 ford 60 in the front of my jimmy and love it. BTW bob, I know the swap has been done, and I believe you can now buy the kit from ORU if you don't want to fabricate. I fully plan on swapping a dually ford 60 in the front of my silverado someday. I'm kinda waiting for a 1986-1991 kingpin one with 4.10 gears and dually hubs already. Should go pretty cheap. I've seen several sporting this combo go for less than 700.

Details :ahhh: Details :ahhh:
Once I realized you weren't talking about Oral Roberts University http://www.oru.edu/, I checked out ORU http://www.offroadunlimited.com/ProductCart/PC/mainindex.asp They have an IFS Conversion for the long wheel base such as the Suburban and Full-Size Pickup, but not the shorter wheel base Tahoe/Yukon/H2. It has to do with the driveshaft angles, plus their conversion kit eliminates the ABS Braking. I am willing to sacrifice ride quality for a solid axle but since it is still my daily driver (at this point) I would like to retain my ABS Braking. I have also researched lifting the entire suspension and retaining the IFS; every kit out their requires changing the back spacing on the wheels from 8.5" to 4.5" and at least 18" wheels. Think about the fact that I am already wide, now add eight more inches and I will be restricted to riding trails an H1 can get down because I will be wider than the H1. I just have to suffer in comfort with headed seats, lumbar support, satelite radio, lots of buttons and switches on the console, and enough room for the family...for now.

You can use the kits for the longbeds on the shorter chasis. Front driveshaft angles are not any different, and a H2 is plenty long enough. If you want to retain the ABS and stay away from custom stuff and large wheels, I believe you can use a Ford Superduty front axle and just redrill it to a standard bolt pattern. But the real question is why you want to retain the ABS anyways Bob. They didn't even invent ABS until after you turned 60 :D

I know that most of my fab work looks like it was done by a monkey, but if you want to check out an example of a solid axle swap in a chevy, you should look at my jimmy. I roughly based it off an old kit that a company called stagewest makes, but made mine stronger. With 52 inch long leaf springs in the front, I was able to run 38 inches up an RTI ramp, which is alot better than the 7 1/2 I could with my IFS. Plus my truck rides alot nicer than it did stock, which suprised the hell out of me. That is why I have considered doing a swap on my silverado. For your app, to keep it simple, I would run a kingpin ford 60 (high pinion and dual piston calipers stock!) and then run leafs meant for a 73-87 chevy truck. You probably would get a better ride than you do now, and your off-road capability would increase dramatically.

no offence keith but there is no way in hell i would spend some serious coin on an axle for an h2 and then put the truck on leafs....

bob, run a stiff sway bar and some pretty big diameter coilovers about 12" long with it linked. do a 3 link with a panhard (not radius arm style) so you can keep nice predictable steering. the truck will surprize you after that. youll find yourself seeing just how fast you can get through the choppy stuff :stupid:

this is on a 98ish style 2500

Kingpin, Great Movie but my wife hates it. I still piss her off when it comes on, I have to watch it. Kinda like Pulp Fiction.
