View Full Version : Driveshaft Angles...max with what joint?

OK, I think I'm running 1310's in a Double Cardian one end, standard u-joint on the diff side (forgive me if I screwed up my terminology!).
Is there another joint that can get more angle without binding? I don't have vibes now, but I only can drop about 2" before it binds! I'm about to just grind some material away from the area making contact, but I'd like to find another solution.
Would running a non DC shaft work in my world? The angle would be about the same, maybe less severe, of course tilting my axle and stuff, but I'm not worried about that. I want a shaft on there that won't bind with 2" of drop!!
When I put my 231/D300 doubler in, I am going to extend the wheelbase that much more (about 3-4") so my DS will still be the same length, but I don't want the crappy binding!!!

Is it binding on the T-case side? If it is, you can run a non-cv shaft and get more angle. But it will probably vibe like mad. Or drop your t-case some. If it is binding on the axle, then you need to rotate the axle up.

if you can run a flange on the t-case end you can run toy stuff, its at least as strong as the 1310 joints and yokes. it has stupid crazy angles in a non cv joint and i think 35ish degrees for a non ifs shaft. another option is the offset joint from tom woods but that inherantly has vibes. or you could get a reworked cv from someone like high angle driveline that is capable of about 42*

Yeah the CV end is the one thats binding. I am running a flange right now, but when the 300 goes in, I'd have to decide which route to go.
So a non CV will tolerate more angle before binding. If I get vibes at high speeds, I don't care, its not going to be running highway anymore, maybe a few 55 mph runs to trails and stuff, thats about it.
Dropping the trans isn't an option. I've got a flat skid on there now and no way I'm giving that up! :D I see TJ's running 6" lifts and stuff, slap on a CV shaft and they're fine, I just wondered if I am the only one maxing out a CV! I even had it lengthened about 3".

Have you done a Motor Mount Lift? That would also help, and I think recomended if you shove the t/c up any at all.

Yeah I already have a MM lift. I made my own custom crossmember for the trans/t-case then I built my skid as a separate piece. At that same time I made some 1"MM lift blocks and put in a 1" body lift.
