We're looking at using my wife's 2000 Cherokee for towing a travel trailer. According to the manual, I can tow up to 5,000 pounds with the heavy duty cooling and trans cooling systems. We have the heavy duty cooling system, but I'm pretty sure there's not a trans cooler on it.

So...what's involved with taking care of that? I'm not mechanically inclined enough to undertake an installation like this, so I'm stuck with a transmission shop or the stealership. Any ideas on what something like this would/should cost?

It's not a tough job to do. A decent trans cooler can be mail ordered for around $50. Figure an hour or so. Check with Pat for an install price.

Or, if you want to take the drive, we can do it here.

Ari, do you have the factory tow packaged...with 3.73 gears, and reese hitch. If so it will have the tranny cooler.

Nope. No hitch; and a 3.55 axle ratio based on the factory build sheet.

Thanks Jim, I may be taking you up on your offer! First I have to figure out if we're even going the trailer route, but needed to see what it would take to prep the XJ to do it.

My son tows our 19 ft boat that weighs around 3000 lbs with his XJ. No problem with that weight but 5000 lbs would be more than I'd want to pull up any hills!

The trailer we're considering is a 17-footer. It has a dry weight of 2,700 and a GVWR of 3,800 -- so we'd be a good bit below the max.
