Hope you all had a great weekend! At least we got some good weather Sunday!

I had the opportunity to attend a workshop for Jeep Jamboree USA! Although much of it was Jamboree event specific, there were some topics that are pertinent to any off road event or organized trail ride.

The first one covered trail & event communication (particularly for large events, event spread out over wide areas, and/or events which marginal/no cell service). There are ways to manage these conditions, from sat phones, ham radio at the expensive end, to protocols and procedures to get to an area either with communication or that you can communicate from in the event of an emergency.

And the other topic was the importance of a documented safety plan and emergency protocols for sponsored/organized events; the bigger the event the more important such documentation is. The primary reason for this is to ensure that every person working the event knows exactly what to do and how to do it in case of an emergency. This is primarily for the safety of everyone in attendance, but sad to say, there is some "CYA" here too. In the event something bad happens, lack of a documented safety plan and protocols (and of course following them!) could be a huge factor if the event happens to get sued.

Even though the event I coordinate (Drummond Island Jeep Jamboree) has a 'safety plan' that satisfies our DNR permit, as a result of this workshop we've already begun working on a revised, updated, and comprehensive safety plan & protocols.

So there's some "food for thought" for all of you event planners out there!!

Mike, that's good stuff. My major event planning has focused on GG where there is Zero communication outside of CB range with the exception of HAM radios. In years past we had some specific communication plans but we haven't reviewed them recently. This is a good reminder that we should review them next week at GG!
