3rd Annual Wheelin’ for a Cure, September 26th, 2015
I would like to share with you what the Wheelin for a Cure Annual Event is all about. It is our chance to support “normal children” dealing with extraordinary circumstances. It is a chance to send kids with cancer and leukemia to camp so they can just be “kids for a change” and it is a chance to send their siblings to camp to help deal with their emotions and a chance for them to be “first for a change”.
Camp provides a safe place to enjoy normal childhood camp activities in a healthy outdoor setting. Skilled nursing personnel are on hand 24/7 and all their medical needs can be taken care of on site, even chemotherapy. Campers gain Hope, life-long friendships and skills to deal with school, work, and everyday challenges. Many kids come back year after year and when it is time, they come back as volunteers.
Special Days Camp is for kids 6 thru 17. One week for the siblings and one week for the child living with cancer. There are over 100 kids at each camp, last year there were 125 at the sibling’s week when we visited. There is also a Winter camp where both groups get together for a Fun Filled weekend. These experiences are life changing and so worth our time. It costs about $1000.00 a child to go to camp. Each family is asked to pay $75.00 for their child. 90% of these families are unable to pay, usually because of medical expenses one prescription for their child could cost $75.00. No child is ever turned away because they can’t pay. This is where we come in. With your support we would like to send at least 10 kids to camp in 2016. Because of your generosity, the 2nd Annual Wheelin for a Cure Event is helping to send 6 kids to camp this August. Please join us on September 26th and let’s send 10 or MORE kids to camp.

3rd Annual Wheelin for a Cure 2015

On Saturday September 26th, 84 different kinds of 4x4’s traveled around the Allegan State Forest area to raise money for the kids of Special Day’s Camp. They started out at the Moose Lodge in Dorr and headed to New Richmond Park. Participants went out in groups with trail leaders or by themselves. Everyone was given a map of the route that had “I Spy” spots along the way to find. Some of the hints were “What is Superman’s Dressing Room – phone booth, what kind of bell is it – School Bell or Missing Bell. One of the favorites was who is Fred and Wilma’s Pet – Dino. Dino is a very large dinosaur made out of various parts from trucks, jeeps and misc. parts sitting by a driveway. This year he was wearing a WFC t-shirt. When wheelers arrived at New Richmond Park there was a trivia game to play, either a regular version or the 4x4 version. Everyone had the opportunity to win an extra door prize voucher by playing this game.
After visiting at New Richmond wheelers traveled onto Little John Park for lunch.

The trails were a little dusty but everyone arrived in good spirits for lunch. Lunch was donated by JBS (BBQ meat) Harding’s in Plainwell, 4byFour’s Offroad Suspension and Fabrication, in Fruitport, and All and Any Services, Inc. in Grand Rapids. Several Two Tracker families donated supplies, snacks and the delicious apples. There was a Horseshoe game to play at Little John were participants had an opportunity to win extra door prize tickets. I understand there were a few ringers and a lot of close shots.

After lunch everyone headed back to the Moose for the raffles and door prize drawings. On the ride back to the Moose there was a “Find the Hand Game”. 13 colorful wooden hands were hidden along the route either hanging on branches or stuck in the ground on a stake. Several hands disappeared after we set them out so the most anyone found was 10. These hands were to remind people why we were here and that every child needs a helping hand. Thank You Kevin Molenkamp Fine Custom Woodworking for donating them.

After arriving back at the Moose there were games for the kids to play while we waited for everyone to get back. The GoPro camera was raffled off along with the wheeling quilt. The 50/50 drawing winner donated their winnings back to the event for a total of $344.00 going to the kids. The door prize raffles were set up so you were able to pick which prize you would like to win. The loosing tickets were put back into the bowl for the second chance drawing at the end. There were over $5500.00 worth of door prizes donated this year. Everything from Venom Motorsports donating a lift, MHJC donated a Jeep Trip, Jeep Jamboree donated a Jeep trip, LineX of Western Michigan donated a Bed liner, Smashhole donated a 50” light bar, Zone/BDS donated a variety of prizes, Ace Engineering, JCR, Tom Woods, TC Paintball, and Great Wolf Lodge and many more companies donated some very nice gift certificates. Lots of family activities prizes were donated like Greenfield Village, Henry Ford Museum, a Mackinaw Island package, Grand Rapids Children’s Museum, Fredrick Meijer Gardens, Oswald Bear Ranch, an awesome Jeep Grill Fire Ring and lots of other prizes to choose from. We are very fortunate to have so many business and Two Tracker Families supporting this event. Venom Motorsports, Parkwood Pharmacy and All and Any Services, Inc. were a few of the substantial supporters of this event this year.

Something new this year was the Club/Group Challenge. The winners were the Michiana Jeep Club and runner up was Dautless Jeepers. It will be fun to see who wins it in the following years. Can Michiana keep their title?

This year the 3rd Annual Wheelin’ for a Cure event raised $10,767.86. This includes a donation from Venom Motorsports for $2067.00 from their Smoke Off. Venom also sent a check directly to Special Days from their Smoke Off for $4700.00.

Because of your participation and generosity Wheelin’ for a Cure and the
Venom Smoke Off will be sending at least 11 children to camp in 2016.

Thank you for giving these kids a chance to just be kids.
You do make a difference in their lives!
