View Full Version : St. Helen Rock Course Maintenance - More Rocks!

June 3rd, 2014, 10:57 AM
This past weekend we (the Tri-City Trail Riders) performed some maintenance on the rock course of Saint Helen. The maintenance was part of a special maintenance grant (from the ORV fund) that we submitted and were authorized to do this fiscal year. The proposed grant was submitted as part of Great Lakes Four Wheel Drive Associations trail maintenance paperwork and was able to be approved thanks to the relationship between GLFWDA and the DNR’s Parks & Rec division.

Included in the maintenance was 87 ton of rock to be used to fill in areas on existing courses, implementing a new lower approach for the tube course and some general brushing and clearing.

The pile of 87 ton of rock that was moved to the rock course:

Concrete blocks that were used for the new approach:

The approach on the tube course (was previously just rocks) was pushed out and was just about impossible for even the most built rigs when approaching the run straight on. The new approach is two levels of 2x2x3 concrete blocks that are “stepped”, with a small rock scramble below that.

Now a rig on 37” tires can approach the obstacle head on and be able to successfully crest the first tube.

Before the new approach was in rocks had to be stacked at the bottom, and it was still just about impossible for even the most built rigs:

It went very smoothly! 87 tons of rock later and Robs Dodge is still in one piece, can't say the same for his back or Nic's kidneys! kudos to those two for taking a beating getting the rocks back to the course.
