I searched all winter for an orange flag on a strudy pole and I found a ton of bicycle type flags, I know the shops up near the dunes sell them but they did not want to ship them to me (seems shipping costs as much as the flag)
I did find that Recreational leisure in Farmington has a few left , these are the thick fiber rod and are 2 piece with a bolt type connection at the base and they are 9 ft tall. I think it was 17.95 but I got a 10% discount because they like me. They are near the parts bench in a tube ...the service guy will tell you they dont have anymore so you'll need to look around for yourself.

Also appletree automotive ? will have some at the dune buggy show in lansing this month so I'm told .

Your right, just about every store and gas station around Mears has the flags. The two piece is worth the extra couple of bucks, easier to store and I leave the bottom piece on my Jeep year around. It holds my GL flag!

and as a side note, a bicycle flag does not have the adequate square inches. They will turn you around and make you get a bigger one.

What is considered "adequate square inches". :bigemo_harabe_net-01:

Dennis kirk has 3 piece flags but they are the 1/4" thk. pole and fold over to the roof when the wind blows.

I have 2 flags on the front of the jeep because I'm more an engineer than a artist and need the front of the jeep to be symetrically balanced. So I should have enough orange in the air.

Off the top of my head I don't know. But I know they have rejected bicycle flags in the past. I have also seen them reject dual bicycle flags as SER suggested. This is because they are looking for one BIG form of visibility.

In my book, the nice flags for $35 or so is not a bad investment.

Best recollection I have (cause we did it last century!) was 50 Sq Inches minimum requuired on any one flag. 2 flags would net you 100 Sq In, not 25 Sq In and 25 Sq In

I'm still covered , I can remove the left one with a flick of the wrench..... if these little rules keep poping up it may not be worth the trouble.

I used to ride at the brighton rec. area way back and flags were needed but when a motorcycle is clipping along WFO and comes across a truck or dune buggy there is not much of a swerve to be had .

If the flag needs to be on a certain side and you can only see the flag how will you know if it's coming at you , going away or stopped ?.
The only rules I heard was orange flag at 10ft. above ground , full size rigs need it in the front , motorcycles and quads need it in the rear

Can someone please list the rules, I have not been there and from what I've looked up there is not much for spec's.

I just looked at the state web site And I did not see anything about the amount of flags just that they need to be orange, 10ft. tall , 8 ft. under motion, rectangular 10" x 5". there was more info but I think it answered my question.

Maybe we need a post started to be a check list with items needed and only the factual requirements.

Nobody in the Lansing area sells these things, so I guess I'll need to get one when I get to the area over there. What about mounting/attaching? Is there some system for mounting?

I was hoping to get one early so I could mount it the way I wanted -- properly. :WhiteRhino:

I just measured my 50th anniversary Silver Lake flag that Pete (the unit manager) gave me last year and it is 10"x9"

When entering the "ramp" into the sand there is a pole that measures the flag height, it is at 10'.

Full size vehicles flag mounts on the front, quads and bikes it mounts in the rear, all need to be the minimum 10' in height!

You can have 30 flags accross the front of your junk, it really does not matter as long as one of those meets the square inch minimum, from my above measurement I would say 90"sq is that minimum.

You also need to be at 98 decibals for full size vehicles, if you have a chambered muffler on your rig your good to go!

So a list of whats needed:

Flag
ORV sticker
Chambered muffler (if you have no chambered muffler than a spark arrestor like on a SuperTrapp will work)

Air down to a maximum of 15, more for tires with stiff sidewalls like Swampers, I run anywhere from 2-4 pounds with my beadlocks. Without beadlocks I used to run 6 in the front and 4-5 in the rear.

Hope this helps!

Pat

Do you run your GLFWDA flag as your dune flag or do the dune flags need to be a certain color?

i never thought a flag discussion could be so involved and detailed, make a mount on the front of your vehicle to accept a 1/2" bolt then show up to ANY business in the area and pick a flag......

I asked about color, thanks for telling me how to mount it tho that was helpful, but not what I asked. Lets say I have a flag that fits the size requirement. Do you have to have it be a dayglo color or something?

International orange. Like every one else is saying....all the business carry them. There won't be a problem getting one. I think the flags are actually 8 1/2 feet so the mount position on the vehicle needs to be approx 18" high anywhere on the front left to right will be acceptable.
And the noise issue isn't a real big deal as long as your not open headers. But I do think the std was 96 dBa not 98 dBa.
I have a meter if anyone is interested. I usually have it with me on all wheeling events, including Quarterlies

This forum is here for a reason, CONVERSATION. Personally man, you need to learn a valuable lesson in life: Listening. But I understand, "you know it all already". Been there, 15 years ago, when I was 17. You couldn't help yourself to take cheap shots at A2 Driveshaft. Why you even bothered to try that is beyond comprehension as he repaired a broken CV joint on the trail just as fast as in the shop. Now yer working on DD, and I know about "your PM". The problem is this thread has gone too far down a destructive path that is unnecessary and needs to be locked -- Tim??

There's nothing wrong with posting a question at anytime about anything because new perspectives may enter the discussion, new answers may be available, and it may lead to a conversation between members that might not have otherwise occurred.

Part of the the trouble with posting on the Internet is that people's intentions don't always come through clearly because of the way the words are written and the way they are read.

So, bottom line is this: If you have a question, post it! If you don't want to answer the question, don't answer it. But let's keep the personal stuff to ourselves. We have plenty of 4WD boards with drama on them; I'll go there if I need a dose.

There is one more side of this that is being missed: We have a wide range of ages and experience on this board. Some of us have been wheeling for more than 30 years. Personally, you have never seen me call anyone an ass even though I have "been there done that" more than most of you.

Others are just getting started and we even have a thread about getting children involved. It seems as though some of the older folks are getting riled up just as much as the younger generation. Keep in mind that to my knowledge, Bryce is the ONLY MEMBER IN THE 20-25 age range that is participating actively on this board. Is he full of P&V? Sure! So what?

What do you guys want for the future of this board? Only the plus 30 and under 15 ages? Because unless you plan to exclude the 15-30 age range, you will should expect to see people expressing themselves differently than you might. You as parents have plenty of compassion for each phase of your children. You also quote that you have "been there done that" in your P&V years. So, if you are so mature, why don't you understand someone who is expressing themselves differently than you would like. I have yet to see Bryce call someone an ass or swear at anyone. That shows me a different type of maturity. Even if he is a know it all.

So, ALL OF YOU GUYS NEED TO LIGHTEN UP, SHAKE HANDS AND GET ALONG!

This post should not be locked , it was a value to hear the advice and just because the gov posts info does not mean it's understandable to the user , it is best to hear from those who have been there and done that . I will say 95GEO was being a smart allick and really should not have posted anything , if he feels our questions are beneath him then he should just not reply. I do not recall anything posted on the main page sayin "must be approved by 95 GEO" if he wanted that then he should have bought MJ and been a king.

I read many posts which I say "I cant believe he asked that " but you know thats how we learn and I do not reply with a cocky answer I just dont reply at all.

You know what else I'm 40 yrs old and I have a reserve of piss & vineger saved up for emergencies but I also have mature control on how I use it.

Bottom line is one day 95 GEO will cross paths with someone who will not tolerate his personality and he will scurry off with his tail between his legs. I personally deal with his type personalities every day so it rolls off my back.

They sell two different mounting brakets at most of the stores - a flat bracket about 5 inches long, 1/2 holes at each end, and a 90 degree bracket with two 1/2 holes. You need to make sure you have a hole available before you get there. I forgot to drill ahead of time, but had a bolt on my flat-tow bracket that worked great.

Ummmm......well.....OK, I know that we will be able to get the flags around Mears, but should we pack a drill and bits or something. I don't want to get a flag and have no way to mount it. Do most of you guys just drill holes or what? I'm wondering how these flags are mounted. Do they come with a mount or should I fab up something before I go up?

So I can drill a 1/2" hole and bring a bolt or two and I should be able to get it figured out :thumb-up:

ok, I see. It's just a pole with a threaded stub. I think I'll fab up something or drill a hole in my winch plate and just mont it there

E, what Rob did for his Ram was take a couple 1" wide by 1/2" thick aluminum sticks and drill/ tap them for a 1/2-20 hole. They worked out really good, and I'm sure you could do something similar.

Yup, picture is worth a thousand words eh? :doah:

I THINK you have enough mecanical ability to fab something like that huh? :rolf: I don't know...you might have to buy a bunch more tools...I don't think you have enough down in that shop of yours to handle this. Tell ya what, it'll be cheaper for ya to just trade a cv-driveshaft for a mount that i'll make for ya. :P

If I have/found an old flag at the house I just bought that says silver lake on it, but it is triangle in shape I should be good?
[/b]

Nope, it might have been good at one time, but the official word is now they have to be rectangular.

If you didn't take the time to check out this site: http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-1...34760--,00.html (http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10365_15070-34760--,00.html) for the Silver Lake State Park Off-Road Vehicle Area; you may not be aware in addition to the Orange Flag and Orv Sticker:

All motor vehicles entering the park must display a Michigan State Park Motor Vehicle Permit.

You still have time, you can purchase your permit online at http://mi-mall.michigan.gov/webapp/wcs/sto...-1&orderId=null (http://mi-mall.michigan.gov/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10051&storeId=10101&categoryId=10352&langId=-1&orderId=null) or you can purchase it when you get there; cost is $24.00 for an Annual Permit. You can also buy a daily permit when you get there.

And, if you haven't purchased your ORV Sticker, you still have time to visit http://www.mdnr-elicense.com/welcome.asp or you can purchase it when you get there.

It takes about a week to get the Permit or Sticker in the mail with no lines...

You can buy a state park sticker and ORV right at the gate.
