MEARS, MI -- With the expansion of the days with later hours, Silver Lake State Park will be providing users of the dunes with four more weeks watch the sun set.

The state park in Oceana County will stay open to 10 p.m. for two more weeks in the spring and two more in the fall. The formal action making the change was presented Thursday, Feb. 7 at a meeting of the Natural Resources Commission in Lansing.

“It extends not the season, but the hours,” said Park Manager Charlotte Kiefer. “That should pick up quite a few of the sunset folks. It’s absolutely gorgeous – that’s the time to come.”

The park will be open for off-roading until 10 p.m. May 1 to Sept. 15 in 2013. The late hours had previously run May 15 until the day after Labor Day. The park will still close to off-road vehicles at 8 p.m. during the month of April and from Sept. 16 to Oct. 31.

“Our staff believed it was a good thing,” said Ron Olson, chief of parks and recreation for the Department of Natural Resources. “I believe the demand is still there.”

Silver Lake is the state’s only public site that allows off-road vehicles to drive on dunes that run up to the lakefront, and draws thousands of tourists from around and outside of the state. Kiefer said the switch will be a win-win for the off-roaders, and area businesses focused on the tourism industry.

Other changes for Silver Lake’s off-road vehicle enthusiasts this season:
•Reflecting state law, drivers of off-road vehicles will now have to have a valid driver’s license, although children ages 12 and up who have a special off-road safety certificate will still be able to drive under direct adult supervision.
•As a safety precaution, hobbyists who use remote-controlled vehicles will be restricted to a certain part of the park outside of the off-road vehicle area

Thank you for the information............Silver Lake is my families favorite vacation spot, and we enjoy the off-road park.
I would be interested in finding out where the RC location is, because my son usually brings up his RC Crawler when we go.
