taken from the United site:

"2006 Annual Convention!
Mark your calendar! The UFWDA Annual Conference will be held July 12-15, 2006 at Oakridge TN. Activities will include trail rides at Windrock and Tellico. More details will be posted soon".

We want to take a large contingent of GL members and friends to Tennesse for the trail rides at Windrock and then over to Tellico! This is the week of July 12 2006.

Do you want to carravan down with us and enjoy some awsome rocks and scenery? Then camp together?

I have been to a UFWDA trail ride at Parragon in 04 and it was a blast wheeling with folks from all over the US and even New Zeeland, the United international VP is from there!

We will post the dates and departure times as soon as we nail them down!

So take a week off work and join us!

I am going to Windrock in April; I am still trying to convince the wife we need to go back in July. I pushing to do both, Windrock and Tellico. I have been to Windrock before; but I have never been to Tellico - so I am like Bryce I would prefer Tellico, but if I only get one chance/event to go, I'll go where most of the people would be going.

I booked our room last week, but am still waiting on some confirmation info from Southern on the rates.

We have not been to Windrock. We're looking for some "mild" trails because we have to drive the Grand back to Ohio after the United meeting.

From the sounds of it, most people are going down Sat to wheel on Mon-Tue @ Windrock, then on to Tellico on Wed-Thur then return home on the weekend. I'll be down to Windrock, then on the UFWDA Convention Wed-Fri, then wheel @ Tellico by myself on Sat. :<(((
Tellico on the weekday is GREAT though, I did it a few years back. Aside from some event happening the weekend after, it shouldn't be to crowded during the week. Have to check the Cherokee NAtional Forest calender to see if anything big is goin on there on that weekend. Usually the boys from Southern, David, and Stefan try to pick a quiet weekend for the folks from UFWDA to be there.

I don't understand your thinking.
Wheel Windrock Monday Tuesday with the convention ride. Then wheel Tellico for the next 2 days. Come home on the weekend.

If you wheel Tellico AFTER the convention on the following weekend, it would require taking off the following monday from work and wheeling in a crowd. I don't have enough vacation time to dedicate 3 days at the convention.

We've been resarching campgrounds and found that in the Windrock area there is only one that we found through a link in the Coal Creek OHV area that takes reservations is Helton's RV Campground in Oliver Springs 5 miles from trailhead. They have full hook ups and lots of space for that week. They also have cabins for rent. They're 30 minutes from I 75 at Knoxville.
HELTON'S RV CAMP (http://home.comcast.net/~khelton5221/RV_PARK.HTML)
I'm sure there's others that take reservations but they're hard to find.

We also found in the Tellico Area a campground Crawfords' Camp 15 minutes from Murphy NC.
They're 15 minutes from trialhead and take reservations. They have full hooks ups and sites on a stream and cabins for rent. There's also lake 10 minutes away ran by the TVA that has swimming, boat rental ect .
They're 105 miles from Knoxville. They are set up for OHV groups and have lots of space for that week.
CRAWFORDS CAMP MURPHY NC (http://www.crawfordsattellico.com/)
The next site is the real estate ad from last year before it was sold and has better photos of the campground.
CRAWFORDS CAMP BETTER PHOTOS (http://www.1rg.com/mrg/fsbo/stcr/nc-mountain-off-road-campground-four-wheel-jeep-for-sale-by-owner.htm)

We've never camped in that part of the country before but they're both close to the trailhead/ reservations and towns for supplies.

For Tellico, I was planning on staying at the State Line Camping area. It's basicaly right at the trail head. It's first come, first serve, very rustic. Great camping though, right on a quick moving stream (a.k.a. bathing area).

My only concern is the room needed to turn the trailer around though, and it does tend to get pretty busy.

The more I think about, it the place ridgerunner was refering too would be safer bet, especially considering trailer length and turning it around.

Rob,
The one I stay at is #7 if I remember. It's before Stateline and on the left side right along the river. There is room to turn around 38' footer with trailer. Stateline is up at the entrance. There's also one on the right, Oak Ridge campground or some such..... Getting there on Friday 'ish will suck and most likely no spots will be available. So I highly doubt we'll have much choice. Would have relly liked to done it the way we did it a few years ago. Arrive Sunday afternoon. Wheeled all by ourselves almost for three days.
The only problem with the campground Ridgerunner identified was that it is on the other side of the park. The boys from Southern have always tended to stay on the Tennessee side. There is a larger campground on the Tenn side by Green Cove if I remember correctly, never stayed there though. I'll dig up my Tellico map and see what it shows.

WHERE TO CAMP AT TELLICO?

It's been a long time since a post from anyone and I've received some great Nat'l Forest
service maps and a portion is attached.
To sum it up. On the TN side are many Nat'l forest camps which are rustic first come first serve.
Those are listed by number from 39 thru 47 on the second attachment on this post.
The ranger at Tellico told me that the camps are small and having a large rig could be a problem
except for Mc Nabb Creek Group Camp which is # 40 on the map. Don't know how far from the
trailhead this is but reservations can be made through reserve usa and it's available July 9th
for the whole week and beyond. However, we must have a minimum of 10 campers at the site.
The fee is only $30.00 total per day. It's rustic with pit toilets and hand pump well, no elec. One
of the ranger's told me it gets allot of use.
On the NC side there is one Nat'l forest camp Hang Dog which is also like the TN camps.
There is also a new private campground outside of Murphy, NC 10 minutes from trailhead
called Crawford's camp. They take reservations, can accomodate large rigs, full hook up,
or rustic, camping cabins, showers, laundry, gas, ice, group pavillion. All sites are on the
river. Check out their web site: www.crawfordsattellico.com
I talked with Danny there today about the week of July 8th thru 15th and he told me they've
got sites and cabins and recommended we make reservations soon.

As far a drive time is concerned, I talked with a ranger out of Cleveland, TN and he told
me that route 64 off I 75 through Ocoee is a great road and is only about 20-30 minutes
farther than staying on the TN side. Basic mileage is Knoville to Murphy 140 miles.

We're all driving a long way to get to this area and if we want to camp together it may be
a good idea to have reservations. I like Crawford's because of the conveniences
it offers especially the gas and ice. What do you guys think?

I agree Jim, I could call back danny at crawfords and ask him to hold some sites, like maybee 10 or 12 so if more people decide to go on the trip, there would be enough reserved. he's not asking for any money down right now only if we have some cancelations to let him know a week or two ahead of time. as for the windrock area I havent had a chance to check out any of the ones Jarhead listed, except for Heltons RV park wich I called a couple months ago. seemed like a nice place and would take reservations. So is it Crawfords for Tellico?
What about Windrock before the Convention??? You have these three, look at the websites I pasted and let's get some feedback.

Windrock: No reservations taken First Come First Serve...3 sites only 5 are pull thru. cost 28-32 per day 2 adults. add adults 3.00 per night
Personal comments, appears to be relatively open field, has shower and dump station. only a few miles from Windrock OHV area.
http://www.windrockcampground.com/

Helton:Resevations taken, 25 sites, 36.50 per night add adult 10.00 per night, restriction on dogs, no guard dogs, no outside dogs that create disturbances,
Personal comments, also appears to be relative open field not many trees. 5 or so miles from OHV, most expensive.
http://home.comcast.net/~khelton5221/RV_PARK.HTML

Cross Eyed Crickett: 47 campsites First Come first Serve, swimming pool, hot tub, Appears to have group camping available but would need to inquire more if group interested, pull thru sites 25.00 back in sites 23.00.
Personal comments: one of the nicest campgrounds I've seen in a quite a while. only drawback is distance to convention and Windrock. About 30 miles but is the one Southern 4WD Assn recommends.
http://www.crosseyedcricket.com/Default.htm

My vote is going to be Cross Eyed Cricket
Any other thoughts?

Rob, the camp sites right at the border we stayed at when you, Jim, Mike, and I went down a few years ago are gone. They made a better bathroom out of those 4 sites, and they try to keep people from parking there besides use of the bathroom. Kevin was able to turn his double hauler around in that area last summer.

There are still a lot of sites further up the road on the other side of the creek, that was the only big difference I noticed.

Yeah, kb8ymf was saying the sites down the road have plenty of room. I thought Jim (MSG) had trouble turning around but now that I you mention it, I think it may have been because of everyone else parking right there. That's a bummer that those sites at state line are gone, those were great.

I'd really prefer not to drive to far to get to the trail head.

JohnnyJ, do you remember if that was Crawford Camp that we stayed at the year I rode with you? That seemed like a long drive to get to the trail.

JohnnyJ

From my understanding, they are all part of the Stateline campground between the back road to trail 2 and the state line, but I don't know for certain. Both times I've camped there, that's where I stayed.

That section isn't free, but not expensive. You put money in an envelope and drop it in the safe, and display the tear off receipt on the site so the rangers can verify that you paid. It was something like $7/night.

A few friends had stayed in the park (a few years ago) between Stateline and the water crossing on trail 5, but its my understanding that a lot of those areas have been made inaccessable, although I've still seen people camping on the edge of the water at the crossing on 5. But not in between like they used to. Those areas were "free" besides paying to wheel in the park.

Paying to get in the park is like camping, you put money in the envelope at pay stations at either entrance, keep the receipt and drop the money in the safe. I believe that was $5/day last year. You can also go into Murphy and get a season's pass for about $25 or $30, which we did one year since we had to stop in Murphy to hit up the Walmart for some last minute supplies.

JohnnyJ, do you remember if that was Crawford Camp that we stayed at the year I rode with you? That seemed like a long drive to get to the trail.
[/b]

No, those "cabins" were just outside of Murphy (trailers with wood siding.. hahaha). I forget the name of the place, but I remember enjoying sleeping in the AC, taking showers, and having a fridge to store beer in; but the drive did suck.

Crawford's Camp is on the way to Murphy, but you make a different turn pretty early on, not long after exiting trail 1. Take a look at the map in the link below, I think the cabins we stayed at were off of 19 on the bottom left of the map.

I checked with 4 seasons today and they have alot of openings as of today. He has 6 sites left that are pull through but most others also have 30 amp hookups. he said his camp is about 20 miles from windrock. seems like he has alot to offer. 40 sites in the park and takes reservations

as for Cross eyed Cricket campground, I read in there rules about a NO ALCOHOL alowed policy. Looks like a nice campground though.

I vote for four seasons,

I guess I vote for Four Seasons if that's where the group is staying. It's 18.6 miles to Convention for me later in the week however is is 25+ to Windrock so trailering will be in order for some. They say that Windrock has really narrow bridge so trying to M/H in is out for Pat and Jim K with their 'mobile homes' might be tight. What are the rates? Any idea what the place looks like???? Are we camping in a field or is there some shade? What is the arrival date for everyone? We're coming from Zooki-Melt @ the Badlands on the 9th Sunday staying till Friday or so.

My dates are the same as yours. I made reservations at Crawford's camp in Murphy, NC for 5 sites which includes myself and they all have full hook ups and are all along the creek and are very large. Arrive Wednesday 7 12 and depart Saturday 7 15.
They also have a variety of cabins available.Remember this county doesn't sell beer but only wine and liquor but you can drink anything there. So, we'll have to bring it with us from TN.
Going to Tellico: Karl, Michele and kids, Jim and Diane, Pat and Kim, Rob and Theresa and Tim and Shirley.
Crawford's have more sites available, and if more people want to go just let me know and I'll add more sites.

Also, I was curious about Four Seasons and tried to find a web page and couldn't but came up with a quote from a campground review site and found the following comment:

All Ratings (1=poor 10=excellent): 1
Campers comments:

Very unfriendly and not helpful. Muddy sites and very tight. Lots of permanent. Very close to interstate. Avoid! We camped here in a Motorhome in 2004.

That sounds pretty discouraging having only a 1 rating - other camps they rated were at least a 4 or greater at the worst. So I looked into the Trailer life directory and they were listed but were not rated and had a temporary listing. They're listed int the Woodalls with an average site width of 20' also intially told me pull throughs were available and then changed his mind. I was pretty discouraged! I know that I voted for this location a few posts before but I'm having second thoughts and started to research alternatives.

JarHead had listed a few campgrounds and I found that Mountain Lake Marina and Campground in Lake City, TN had a great web site with lot's of info and photos. The Trailer Life Directory 2006 rates them at 7.5/7.5/7.5 which is on the high side for that directory.
They're 4.5 miles East off of I 75 just north of Knoxville and 18 miles from Oliver Springs per Mapquest. They're on Norris Lake and have a motel and cabins, large shaded sites with a pool, laundry, store, restraurant on property, shore fishing and boat rental, a regular full service resort. I called them and they told me their sites are on average 25' to 30' wide and anywhere from 50' to 75' deep with 50 amp and full hook up at $25.00 a night.
I called them and they had 7 sites very close to each other and knowing time is getting tight I booked 7 sites for everyone. Sites 87, 126 thru 129, 131, 132. Mountain Lake Camp seems like a vast improvement over Four Seasons and I don't want to seem presumptuous. I know we're all booked at Four Seasons already but merely presenting this other option. I've been skunked before on site un seen situations and don't want that to happen on a trip that's so far from home. What do you guys think?

As well, I booked the Four Season Campground and was a bit concerned after not finding any website. This also concerns me that far from home. I'm all for moving it to a 'recognized campground' that we can all feel more comfortable with. So you have 7 sites, Who was on your list? I need my campsite till Friday as I am staying for Convention and NOT going to Tellico :cry-river:
As a FYI mileage from Campground to Windrock ~ 20 miles backroads 40-45 minutes my estimation, Convention ~20 miles also but not as many backroads. About the same as Four Seasons.
If we're all onboard, I call and cancel my reservations.

Jim, I already booked a one site for you from Sun through Sat noon. I had thought Bryce was going to have his own site but if he's sharing we only need 7 and Johnny J will be the seventh. However, they have more sites available and anyone can add at anytime.
I put the reservations under my name Karl Mosher and paid for one night for each site and then everyone can pay the remainder as they arrive. You can settle up with me at the park. Check in and out time is noon.

As far as space goes, they told me that each site is 25' to 30' wide and 50' to 75'. If length of rig is an issue we can park the trailers in their boat trailer parking lot. Looks like a great place!

Well, we did the United ride at Windrock on Monday and Tuesday. The short report in my opinion is that unless you have a BIG TIME rock crawler, don't waste your time at Windrock. They have a bunch of stock run type trails that are long and dusty. For an open vehicle in 90 + degrees, a dusty trail is no fun. The challenge areas are a long way from anything so to get there you have a lot of slow riding. There is a monster hill rock climb they call Rattlerock that would be good for entertainment.

Don't get me wrong, I am glad we checked the place out. But for the drive time, the extra 3 hours to Tellico are worth it.

Did you run trails 3, 16, 23 or 39?

To enjoy Windrock in everything it has to offer, you need to go before the middle of April. When the Mountain starts to dry out, the adventure has a tendency to go with it. I have been there twice (March and early April) Awesome Time! Went again in May and there wasn’t anything very challenging because everything was dry. Trail 23 and 39 were fun each time.

Did 16...boring, 22/23 fun rock creek crossing, and 39. 39 was the most fun. Jim and I both walked right up without much fanfare. Last 500 feet of trail was the only challenge, but as Jim said.....A/C and closed windows were the order of the day. They mentioned a creek run up to a waterfall but made no offering to take us there. We had different trail guides each day (Both of whom were on 49" IROKS and Rockwell axles.) who we apparently had to 'prove' our ability to. As it is, Kinnes and Mosers stayed home the second day. Doug S went and I twisted Jim K's arm to come along and he did just cause he didn't want to hear me tell him what he missed if he stayed home. In my opinion Windrock for $15 a day PER person is pretty pricey and I'm suprised they get that for the offerings they have. Tellico @ $5 is WAY more worth it.

Tuesday, I had planned to ride shotgun with Jim K, however, once at Windrock I picked up a couple of hitchhikers from Montana. Jim Anderson, the United Voice Editor and friend we're looking to take some pics on the trails.

A group of 3 of us split off from the others, so they could run #39 (an EXTREME trail) and we wouldn't limit their experience, due to us being more stock than built! We were to meet back up with them at the conclusion of our trail. We checked the map we had purchased at the registration shack and picked trail #3 which was listed on the map as a MODERATE trail and was in the same area as #39.

So off we went, my Grand now sporting a newly installed 2.5" lift by Kevin from Jeeperz Creeperz, a similarly equipped S-10 Blazer from Maryland and Chris Boucher (the mate to United's attorney, Carla Boucher) from Virginia in their mildly equipped CJ. The start of trail #3 is easy graded gravel road, after we cleared all the active gas/oil wells, the maintained service road ended and the trail took on more typical characteristics. However as we proceeded, the Moderate trail seemed to disappear into the rocks and climbs. At one point we stopped some ATVs to discuss what trail they were on, #3 they said but this was their first time and they didn't know how it was ahead or how far to the end of the trail.

We were committed and proceeded on UP the trail, expecting it to end around each bend or past each boulder we managed to get over or around. We tugged the S-10 up over a couple of rock ledges that he couldn't quite make with his open front diff. We did find the end of #3 and it was at the top of the final climb up from our last creek crossing. We met the Trail Leader and the rest of the group (including Jim M and Jim K) just climbing out of #39. I asked the Trail Leader (driving a TJ with Rockwells and 49s) if #3 was a MODERATE trail (maybe for him), it seems the NEW map contains a few errors and trail #3 is supposed to be rated EXTREME!

So lesson learned, don't always rely on maps, don't always rely on the locals when they are way BIGGER than you, and always wheel with friends and if possible, consult those who have BEEN THERE DONE THAT .... I should have asked Bob what trail #3 was like in is Hummer! If I had only known!

Oh well, the mild lift made all the difference ... Thanks Jeeperz Creeperz!

Even though I wasnt on the trails the 2nd day I would never drive that far to visit Windrock in the future. It does not even compare to Tellico, or Paragon for that matter, I would rather spend my vacation and money at either of these two.

To that end we are planning on hitting Tellico again soon as I recently found out that my cousin owns a small camp in Tellico Plains :D

One of things I had planned to post was the outstanding gesture by Doug. (DDS4x4) I thought Doug made a real stand up effort to suggest to our one and only trail leader to send him off without a leader just so a couple of us could run a tougher trail.

Doug............. my hat is off to you. Thanks! :thumb-up:
