I know nothing about HAM radios, no one I know has or uses one. After the meeting on drummond, with all the talk of the new set up there, id like to learn more. Can anyone give me a good starting point? I googled, but was left swimming in a bunch of stuff I don't know. Do they make a HAM Radios for Dummies book? Thanks in advance for the help.

I studied on hamtestonline.com and I also had a study book. The basic tech test isn't too hard with a little studying. I've also spent a bunch of time just listening while driving around just to learn some etiquette.
As for the radio itself, its not really that complex but I don't use most of the options so I don't know how to use much on it. Lol

I used hamtestonline.com and was ready for the technician (basic) license test in about 2 weeks. The next step is finding a shop to work with to help you match up components to get you on the air.

There actually IS a dummies book, but its not what you want. The best book is probably "Now you're talking" by the AARL (AARL.org). Another option is to locate a local ham club and attend a "ham in a day" class to get your technician license.

Here's the exact questions you'll see on the test: http://www.ncvec.org/downloads/Revised%20Element%202.Pdf
Here's the on line practice test I used: http://www.eham.net/exams/
If you search around the web there are also some good on line Flash card study sites.
Make sure you keep studying up until you take the test. At least for me most of the more complicated stuff left my brain a few days after studying.
