i have a 97 tj lifted 6 inches on 35"s and locked both ends, i also have a 2002 super cab short bed super duty 4x4 with a v10 and 305/70/16's. is it easy enuff to just bring the super duty? or do i need the tj? never wheeled the super duty and want to play in it a little, but nuttin to bad. i dont mind scars on the tj but i would on the super duty.
so wht do u all think? i leaning towards the super duty, but ive never been to silver lake. are we gonna be on trails or just the dunes? hope to see u all there! thanks for any input

There's plenty of room at the dunes to not get your truck scratched up. Personally, I prefer a Jeep at the dunes and some of the tighter, twisty areas but you'd have fun with the truck (especially if you high-center it at the top of one of the dunes!).
Or.... you could tow your Jeep with the truck and take them both! :bigemo_harabe_net-64:

i had the same thought last year.... i though i'd have more fun with the tow rig but once i got out there i quickly second guessed taking anything but the trail rig.
take whatever can hit the bumps the best :bigemo_harabe_net-64:

I have ran my Dually on the dunes and it was fine and I had the air cond. on and the stereo cranked so that was cool.
But nothing compares to wheeling your topless Jeep in the sand! Except it could still be a little chilly for the top off in April.
So I guess it is really up to whatever you feel like driving when you leave home.

I don't have a dually (I had the air cond. on and the stereo cranked), but I love my creature comforts.

I take off on what 95GEO and RBB said. Your full size truck will do fine in the open area and hills. When it comes to playing follow the leader in what I call the Bad Lands area, forget the truck. And if you break?????
Take the jeep! :bigemo_harabe_net-64:

I wouldn't really consider driving a stock Suburban around the dunes wheelin', but if you do.........then yes I'll be wheelin' :D

On a personal note, I love the dunes. I know there are others who find it boring. During the summer, it is pretty tough to ride around barefoot in a bathing suit, enjoy the sand, a walk on the beach and a swim in Lake Michigan.
April will be another thing. It will be cold because the wind blowing in off the lake will be picking up cool air from the water. It would be rare to be warm enough to go topless. :bigemo_harabe_net-110:
Much of the sand conditions will depend on the weather. If it is dry, the sand can be very soft and you will need to air down quite a bit. Not sure what tires you have but for a jeep with at least 11.50 tires you will want to go down to around 6 psi. Much more and you will wheel hop and spin. Much lower you start to run the risk of popping a tire off the rim.
With dry sand and a strong wind, there are sometimes drifts at the top of the big hills that are easy to get high centered on. This is always a good time for a few laughs :bigemo_harabe_net-163: when someone gets stuck.
If it is wet, the sand is not as soft and you will find it easier to climb the hills.
Climbing hills: Many first timers have the impression that they have to blast up the hills at high speed. And when you have to back down it seems like a mountain! :bigemo_harabe_net-58:
I recommend that you don't start out on test hill which is the big hill that everyone lines up to spectate when you first come in. Rather, drive out to a smaller hill. IDLE, I REPEAT IDLE up a hill as far as you can. Back down and try it slightly faster and repeat until you have climbed your first hill. This does 2 things: First, you learn what your vehicle is really capable of without high speed. Second, you learn what it feels like to back down. Just keep it straight when backing up.
Terrain: There is open terrain with a variety of small to big hills. The big hills are all one way to eliminate head on collisions. By the way, you will need to purchase a flag at a local store. $40
There is also an area that we have called the "bad lands" for years. It is an area of woods and swamps with tight trails going thru them with short but steep hills. It is alot of fun to play follow the leader in this area. There are also water holes that people play in. Many of them are VERY DEEP and you can drown a motor if not careful. I prefer to avoid them. I am there for the sand.
Finally there is the beach. Years ago we could drive right along the beach and even into the water. Now it is closed and you have to park about 100 feet from the water. Simply say that it is like any other sandy beach in Michigan.
We'll all have fun! :bigemo_harabe_net-64:

my favorite dune rig-- YZ250 with a paddle tire on it, nothing quite like the way 110octaine premix mixes with the smell of the water blowing in off the lake :bigemo_harabe_net-64:
i have had my tj there it was a good time but i have way more fun on my bike

nothing beats the looks you get when you crawl up test hill with all 4 tires churning sand about a 6" deep.... it took me and elusive about 5 minutes total to do it but as soon as we crested over the hill everyone was cheering

Me & WhiteRhino like to do this too! Then when people pull up next to you they start looking underneath your junk like your hiding some magical machine under there that helps you up the hill at a snails pace.
